Agriculture Brussels Livestock report Fed steers, heifers sell on fully steady market Total receipts at Brussels Livestock for the week ending April 28 were 3644 head of cattle and 573 lambs and goats. Fed steers and heifers sold on a fully steady market. Cows sold $2 higher. Veal sold steady with the lambs selling strong to higher. On Friday all weights of stocker cattle sold at strong steady prices. There were 546 steers on offer selling from $108 to $115 with sales to $127.75. One black steer consigned by Strong Farms, Gorrie, weighing 1,425 lbs. sold to Nor­ wich Packers for $127.75 with their overall offering of forty-nine steers averaging 1,441 lbs. selling for an average of $119.94. One limousin steer consigned by Jim Howatt, Londesboro, weighing 1,395 lbs. sold to Norwich Packers for $126.25 with their overall offering of twelve steers averaging 1,428 lbs. selling for an average of $118.21. Three steers consigned by Alvin Dow, Staffa, averaging 1,158 lbs. sold for an average of $120.28 with sales to $121.50. Two steers consigned by Dean Aldwinkle, Varna, averaging 1,298 lbs. sold for an average of $118.07 with sales to $120.50. Thirteen steers consigned by Roger Moore, Goderich, averaging 1,457 lbs. sold for an average of $117.29 with sales to $122.50. Sixteen steers consigned by Kada Farms, Bluevale, averaging 1,431 lbs. sold for an average of $116.70 with sales to $124.50. Twenty-four steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,457 lbs. sold for an average of $114.79 with sales to $126. Twenty steers consigned by Howard Martin, Brussels, averaging 1,428 lbs. sold for an average of $114.37 with sales to $120. Four steers consigned by Murray Johnston, Bluevale, averaging 1,398 lbs. sold for an average of $111.24 with sales to $121.75. Three steers consigned by Ross Baird, Wingham. averaging 1,552 lbs. sold for an average of $111.22 with sales to $121.25. There were 271 heifers on offer selling from $108 to $115 with sales to $128.50. Six gold heifers consigned by David Van Staveren, Clifford, averaging 1,236 lbs. sold for $128.50 with his overall offering of eight heifers averaging 1,230 lbs. selling for an average of $126.17 One rwf heifer consigned by Paul Aldwinkle, Varna, weighing 1,335 lbs. sold to St. Helen’s Meat Packers for $126.50. Gov V backs youth work prog. Ontario will help as many as 4,500 rural students gain valuable work experience close to home this summer, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman announced April 18. “I encourage all employers to act quickly to take advantage of the program.” Hardeman said. “By providing work experience and income to our young people, we can better secure the future of rural Ontario.” The government is providing employers in rural Ontario and the CKNX honours Ken Kelly with FAB award CKNX Radio’s Farm Advisory Board has selected Ken Kelly as the recipient of its first FAB Award of the new millennium. Kelly farms at RR 5, Paisley. He was nominated for the award by the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture. The CKNX Radio Farm Advisory Board FAB Award recognizes the contributions of an individual or groups from Midwestern Ontario to the well being of agriculture. Beef club holds first meeting The Brussels, Belgrave, Beef Club had its first meeting of the year on April 25 at Paul Coultes’ farm. The club has grown to 23 members. President Brett Bean opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Mr. Coultes gave a tour of his feedlot and farm operation, telling the good and bad parts about each. After the walk through the operation, the members split up into three groups. Each received a piece of paper with questions to answer, and a sketch of a feeder, handling facilities as well as housing (bam). The next meeting May 9 at 7:30 p.m. is at Kim Higgin’s. agriculture and food industries with up to $1,120 in wage supplements for each student they hire, up to $100,000. Funding will be provided to employers for up to 16 weeks, any time up to Sept. 30. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is open to rural youth between the ages of 15 and 24, and up to 29 if disabled. Students must be hired by a person to whom they are not related and be Ontario residents and eligible to work in Ontario. They must be planning to go back to school in the fall. “Our rural summer jobs service has had tremendous success, in fact, we exceeded our target by assisting more than 3,000 students in each of the last two years,” Hardeman added. “Based on that success, we have increased the target number of participants.” Program information and applications can be obtained from OMAFRA’s Guelph office, 1 Stone Rd. D1 and D2 cows sold $60 to $67 with sales to $77.50; D3, $55 to $60; D4, $50 to $55. One charolais cow consigned by Roy Dawson, Wingham, weighing 1,310 lbs. sold for $77.50. Two holstein cows consigned by Lacey Farm Ltd., Chepstow, averaging 1,550 lbs. sold for an average of $73.79 with sales to $77. Two cows consigned by Bruce Higgins, Brussels, averaging 1,540 lbs. sold for an average of $69.01 with sales to $75. There were 14 bulls on offer selling from $70.50 to $91.50 with sales to $101.50.
