Lodge meets The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge was held on Tuesday, April 25 with a good attendance. Plans are underway for Friendship Night, May 23 with visitors from six other lodges as guests. Members will be contacted for a donation for the supper being served and also extended an invitation to attend. The next meeting, May 9, will be the election of officers. FROM BRUSSELS Council rezones By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Brussels council at its May I meeting approved the re-zoning which would see a vacant chicken bam at the north end of the village converted into a storage/warehouse. Brian Treble of the Huron Coun ty Planning Department was pre sent to explain the rezoning to council. Because the building had been empty for so long, it didn’t even meet the non-conforming part of the bylaw, he said. “Basically the zoning now doesn’t allow for anything but a building.” he said. The bylaw would attempt to rec ognize the conversion of the build ing and a reduction in the setback. Treble said he and Clerk-Trea surer Donna White had also dis cussed including the allowance for an upholstery shop or furniture refinishing business. There were no members of the public present and no correspon dence had been received to date regarding the rezoning. In accor dance with the Act, letters were sent to everyone within 400 feet of the building as well as to local authorities. White said with the exception of one person, the build ing owner had contacted all the neighbours to explain his plans. Treble suggested the bylaw also include something to protect the village from some day having to service the lot. “There should be something in place so you’re not paying down the road,” he said. “The bylaw gives you a way of making it happen that they don’t get a building permit until there's an agreement about servicing.” Though the owner can proceed with demolition, no building permit can be issued until after the appeal period, which ends May 23. “The idea is to move away from agriculture in urban density,” said White. “This chicken barn would certainly no longer be allowed." was folks were The greens of spring are getting greener and more impressive with each warm day. Just take that extra moment to admire the growth of the season. Now you can grumble and get the lawn mower out. The United Church humming on Sunday as joined the church, babies baptized and friends transferred into the Brussels church life. Rev. Richard Golden of Monkton officiated at this celebration, as family and friends witnessed this new step of life for Lorelei Coultes, Tina Grummett, Catherine Goetz, Mark Coultes and Rod Ward. Brian and Suzanne Wheeler brought Ashley, Tanya and Brian McArter came with Avery, Lorelei and Mark Coultes offered Teaghan and Tina Grummett and Rod Ward brought Mitchell and Gregory for baptism into the United Church. Madill students spent last week in Chicago as part of the concert or Jazz Bands and were ready to compete in the Ovations Music Festival of Illinois. You’ll see the Brussels ones still looking bleary from the long fun-filled days - Crystal McLellan, Laurie Prior, Joshua Gropp and Nicole White. I’m sure they made lots of memories! (Joshua’s ‘close shave’ has left his Mom with something she wont’ forget). Ask some of the coffee shop crowd about the soccer teams of days past and about the lights that surrounded the park, officially known as Market Square. It’s not a new thing, soccer mania, so encourage the teams as they start their practise and offer to help if you’re able. Take a walk and enjoy May. Bye now, Betty G.
