From the Minister's Study, Calvin Brick service marks church’s closing commission and benediction “Let us go remembering these words: In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us, we are NOT alone. Thanks be to God! In laughter and in tears, we leave this building to be Jesus’ church in other places, the Love of God, the Peace of Christ and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us always.” Amen. A brief service of de-consecration was conducted by Rev. Jeff Hawkins, Rev. Peter Tucker and Rev. Mary Jane Hobden following the closing service. Bill Coultes and Jean Mathers represented Huron Perth Presbytery. A time of fellowship and refresh ments was enjoyed after the service. An era ends A Celebration of Ministry marked the closing of Calvin Brick Church in East Wawanosh Twp. on April 9. A service of Celebration of Ministry was held Sunday, April 9 at 2 p.m. to mark the closing of Calvin Brick Church in East Wawanosh Twp. Blyth United celebrates Easter season Greeters at Blyth United Church on Easter Sunday, April 23 were Fred Hakkers and Candace Howson. Ushers were Paul, Nicole, Colton and Kelsey Kerr. Lynda Lentz was organist. Michelle Cook and Heather Elliott were in charge of the nursery. The congregation heard the confir- mand responses from this year’s confirmation class. Welcomed into the church by confirmation were Courtney Bakker, Candice Bearss, Mark Caldwell, Jesse Hakkers, Laura Meier, Kerri Meier and Tammy Root. They answered the questions “Why am I giving my life to Jesus Christ?” and “What differ ence will belonging to Jesus make in my life?” The sermon was entitled Shocked, Blocked, Re-stocked. This is what the risen Christ does for people, said Rev. Ernest Dow. “There was first shock that Jesus was back from the dead. God then blocks us from our old, misguided ways.” Rev. Dow talked about Paul, who before he converted to Christianity, was Saul. Rev. Dow reminded the congrega tion that “each time the apostle Paul got knocked down, the Lord picked him up again until he accomplished the mission.” He was re-stocked. Emily Phillips, Karen Giousher, Paul and Nicole Kerr collected the offering. The confirmation class was wel comed into full membership of the church. As well, Harry, June and Aaron Bakker were welcomed to Blyth United Church by transfer of membership. The Celebration of Holy Communion was observed. This church building was home to the Brick Methodist congregation, which had previously worshipped in the Brick Church across the road from 1871 - June 29, 1958 and the Calvin Presbyterian congregation from Oct. 9, 1882 - Sept. 27, 1955. In 1958 the congregation joined to become Calvin Brick United Church and chose the Calvin Presbyterian Church building as their place of worship. This United congregation worshipped here from July 6, 1955 to April 9, 2000. Because of dwindling attendance and mounting expenses the congre gation voted to disband as of January 2000. Rev. Ernest Dow of Blyth, pastoral charge supervisor, welcomed past and present members and friends of Calvin Brick United Church congre gation and conducted the service with Jessie McGee as pianist. A large bouquet of flowers placed on the communion table, honoured all for mer members of both congregations who have passed on to higher serv ice. Past ministers assisting included Rev. John Roberts, Belgrave; Rev. Peter Tucker, Elliott Lake; Elly Van Berger, lay minister, Exeter and Rev. Mary Jane Hobden who gave the meditation, Go Now in Peace. Special music included two duets by Gloria Dow and Winona Thompson, Follow Me and Known Only To Him and a solo by Rev. Hobden For Those Tears I Died. All were accompanied by Mrs. McGee. Ushers and-offering stewards were Courtney and Cody McGee. The ritual of closure took place with Ivan Dow, clerk of session plac ing the historic roll in the hands of John McIntosh, clerk of session of the sister congregation, Knox United, Belgrave. Jim McGee, chair of stewards handed the minute and record books to Rev. Jeff Hawkins, Huron Perth Presbytery archivist. Gloria Dow, UCW' president, placed the baptismal bowl and com munion chalice in the hands of Rev. Dave Jagger, chair of Huron-Perth Presbytery. Margaret Vincent, representing the children, lifted the Bible showing it to the assembly. Yvonne Coultes, symbolizing the adults of the congre gation, responded with, “It is from this Bible that we have heard the word of God preached. No matter where we go, near or far, the Word goes with us, in our hearts and in our souls. When we leave this place we will carry the Word as a reminder of our continuing ministry.” The service closed with the final Blyth United Church Come Worship The Lord With Us Sundays - 11:00 a.m. Worship Service & Sunday School Minister ~ Rev.
