Madill track athletes get gold at University of Windsor meet Parr Line gets B silver F.E. Madill track athletes came home winners after the University of Windsor Lancer relay track and field meet recently. Kerri Meier, along with teammates Sonya Spaling, Cindy Wilits and Shannon Johnston captured gold in the midget girls 4x200-metre relay race in a time of 1:55. Meier went on to earn a bronze in the 60-metre run, with a time of 8.69. In the Open Girls category, Amanda Palmer placed fifth in the 60-metre in 8.53 seconds; 11th, 400- metre, 1:07.99 and 18th, long jump, four metres. Laura Meier, earned ninth in the 400-metre in 1:06.91 minutes and 12th in long jump at 4.37 metres. Nathan Garland took fifth in the Open Boys shot put with a toss of 12.26 metres. That's $1.00 off regular rates C itizen The Parr Line women’s broomball team proved it can compete with the best in Canada by earning the B side silver medal at the Canadian Broomball Championships, recently in Nova Scotia. The Elite team, comprised of play­ ers from Clinton, Blyth, Kitchener, Goderich, Seaforth, Woodstock, Mount Forest, Flesherton and Stratford, aged 20 to 52, left for Halifax last April 11. According to a report submitted by team member Heidi Elliott, the Pan­ Line squad had a few jitters as they entered their first game of the tour­ nament on Wednesday morning against Ontario’s top team, McMillian Sand & Gravel. The team did not play well in the first period, but picked it up in the second. However, they were defeated 3-0. The Parr Line game MVP was Chris Patchell. Game two for the Parr Liners was against Nova Scotia on Wednesday evening. With no more butterflies, the squad dominated the game from start to finish, winning 8-0. Scoring were Michelle Choma and Bonnie O’Reilly with two apiece, while net­ ting singles were Claudette Dejardines, Kris Gemmell, Heidi Elliott and Tanya Memer. Choma was named game MVP. Alberta was the next opponent Parr Line faced. There was no scor­ ing for the local team in this Thursday game which was described by Elliott as follows: “Alberta was a big, strong team. We got running in our defensive zone too much. Lost 4- 0.” Memer was named game MVP. Later that day, Parr Line played against New Brunswick, and in a tight game won 2-1. An overtime goal by Patchell was Marg Dendstedt was game MVP. The local broomball pleted regular pool play with a close game against an older, experienced Normandian team from Quebec. While remaining close throughout the game, Parr Line was defeated 1 - 0. Patchell was named game MVP. With a record of three losses and two wins, Parr Line was placed in the B division. In its semi-final game, the squad was pitted against hometown rivals the Farmerettes, who also play in the Seaforth- Egmondville broomball league. We were both playing for the pride of Ontario. Our first goal was scored by Michelle Choma. After they tied it up, we sat back on our heels and they took advantage, taking a 2-1 lead. On a pretty passing play, Mary Jean Verbeek put the ball in the net to tie. Marj Dendstedt put the team ahead with a goal in the dying minutes of the game.” The team’s game MVP was Choma. With the; 3-2 victory over their rivals, Parr Line moved on to the B Division final, where they were playing for the gold. For this final, they were again pitted against Quebec’s Normandian team. “After losing to them in pool play earlier that week, we were looking to avenge” the loss. Unfortunately we came up short,” Elliott wrote. “Quebec scored early and we played catch-up for most of the game. The week had taken its toll on all players. The team’s tournament MVP was Chris Patchell. On the Parr Line team which brought home the silver were Kim Rooney, Marg Dendstedt, Chris Patchell, Tanya Merner, Robin Ross, Cheryl Kruse, Glenda Chaput, Bonnie O’Reilly, Heidi Elliott, Kris Gemmell, Karen Van Soest, Jo Ann Gibson, Mary Jean Verbeek, Michelle Choma, Christine Coverdale, Tereasa Rawn, Claudette Dejardines, Caroline Graham, Connie Walters and Cathy Innes. The team passed on thanks to all who gave their support, and helped them reach Halifax. Toronto for a special Reach for the Skies Guiding millennium celebra­ tion put on by Hamilton and Toronto areas with over 4,000 other Guiding members, some from the U.S.A. There was a hot air balloon, crafts, musical entertainment, and a giant sleepover on the turf while watching It's a Bug’s Life on the jumbotron.
