The Parr Line women’s broomball
team proved it can compete with the
best in Canada by earning the B side
silver medal at the Canadian
Broomball Championships, recently
in Nova Scotia.
The Elite team, comprised of play
ers from Clinton, Blyth, Kitchener,
Goderich, Seaforth, Woodstock,
Mount Forest, Flesherton and
Stratford, aged 20 to 52, left for
Halifax last April 11.
According to a report submitted by
team member Heidi Elliott, the Pan
Line squad had a few jitters as they
entered their first game of the tour
nament on Wednesday morning
against Ontario’s top team,
McMillian Sand & Gravel. The team
did not play well in the first period,
but picked it up in the second.
However, they were defeated 3-0.
The Parr Line game MVP was Chris
Patchell.
Game two for the Parr Liners was
against Nova Scotia on Wednesday
evening. With no more butterflies,
the squad dominated the game from
start to finish, winning 8-0. Scoring
were Michelle Choma and Bonnie
O’Reilly with two apiece, while net
ting singles were Claudette
Dejardines, Kris Gemmell, Heidi
Elliott and Tanya Memer. Choma
was named game MVP.
Alberta was the next opponent
Parr Line faced. There was no scor
ing for the local team in this
Thursday game which was described
by Elliott as follows: “Alberta was a
big, strong team. We got running in
our defensive zone too much. Lost 4-
0.” Memer was named game MVP.
Later that day, Parr Line played
against New Brunswick, and in a
tight game won 2-1. An overtime
goal by Patchell was
Marg Dendstedt was
game MVP.
The local broomball
pleted regular pool play with a close
game against an older, experienced
Normandian team from Quebec.
While remaining close throughout
the game, Parr Line was defeated 1 -
0. Patchell was named game MVP.
With a record of three losses and
two wins, Parr Line was placed in
the B division. In its semi-final
game, the squad was pitted against
hometown rivals the Farmerettes,
who also play in the Seaforth-
Egmondville broomball league.

follows: “Always a rough game
when the two teams meet, and this
game was no exception. We were
both playing for the pride of Ontario.
Our first goal was scored by
Michelle Choma. After they tied it
up, we sat back on our heels and they
took advantage, taking a 2-1 lead.
On a pretty passing play, Mary Jean
Verbeek put the ball in the net to tie.
Marj Dendstedt put the team ahead
with a goal in the dying minutes of
the game.”
The team’s game MVP was
Choma.
With the; 3-2 victory over their
rivals, Parr Line moved on to the B
Division final, where they were
playing for the gold. For this final,
they were again pitted against
Quebec’s Normandian team.
“After losing to them in pool play
earlier that week, we were looking to
avenge” the loss. Unfortunately we
came up short,” Elliott wrote.
“Quebec scored early and we played
catch-up for most of the game. The
week had taken its toll on all players.
