PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2000. The sunny side Transition committee tours The McGavin brothers, Brian (left) and Jeff, kept the eggs coming for Duff’s Sunday morning breakfast. It was a well-fed congregation that made its way upstairs for the Palm Sunday service. (V/c/cy Bremner photo) By Janice Becker Citizen staff With the status of the Huron East Municipality official, the transi tion board began to make plans at the March 27 session. Having previously agreed that the municipal office should be in Seaforth because of the central loca tion and its position as the largest pre-amalgamation municipality, the property sub-committee -looked at space which may need to be renovat ed to accommodate the staff. After a tour of the Seaforth town hall, the committee agreed to select three local engineering firms/archi- tects to make proposals, including projected costs to design a plan for the building. Transition board member and Grey Twp. Reeve Robin Dunbar said later in a phone interview that a lot of work needs to be done on the office space, particularly with con cerns for workplace and fire safety. “The building is attractive and central,” said Dunbar. “It will serve the community and it is something to build on in the future.” He said there is also the possibility of obtaining grant monies to aid in the renovations as the town hall is a heritage building. In upgrading the building for its use for five merged municipalities, Dunbar said there is the question of where the PUC may locate if the full building is needed for municipal staff. The council chambers are current ly on the second floor and not wheel chair accessible. This will also have to be taken into consideration. The next step in the process will be for the property committee and the entire transition board to look at costings developed by the architects to determine what can be done, he said. If the cost is too high, Dunbar said, looking at other buildings would be one alternative. The administrative committee approved an organizational chart which would result in nine office positions, a decrease of 1.5 posi tions. Administrative committee mem ber Dunbar said it is hoped the posi tions will be eliminate through attri tion, but there is also the feeling that extra staff may be needed for some time after amalgamation until the workload is determined. By having a couple of extra people around for the first two years, Dunbar suggests it will save agony and stress as well as ease the work load of staff. “We will see what it looks like after the first years.” The committee is also considering moving someone into a position to oversee economic development, an important role in the larger munici pality, he said. CDs stolen from vehicle On April 6 a theft was reported from a vehicle parked on the main street of Seaforth. The owner of the vehicle told police that on April 2 he left his vehi cle parked on the street. Sometime over the next 16 hours the vehicle was entered and 60 CDs of various brands of music were stolen. The CDs are valued at over $1,000.
