From the sidelines
Victory never
eliminates violence
By Hugh Nichol
Do you believe
in deja vu for even
I was amazed by
the similarity of
last week’s WOAA
senior hockey
championship
series and the 1976
Stanley Cup final.
The 1970s Philadelphia Flyers had
literally fought their way to NHL
supremacy by bringing pre
meditated aggression to a new level
of intensity. Names like Moose,
Hound and the Hammer were quick
to protect, eager to instigate, their
mere presence creating an
occultation of intimidation.
The Flyers were not without
talent, but it was carefully hidden
within the realm of their Broad
Street Bullies image. Reggie Leach
was a 60-goal man, Bill Barber and
Bobby Clarke each surpassed the
100 point mark and when injury
free, nobody bettered the
goaltending display of Bernie
Parent.
Their opponents were the
Montreal Canadiens, a team of
artistry on ice, their red, white and
blue sweaters rich in tradition. A
game of skill they would win, the
question was could they neutralize
the Flyers physical attack and in the
words of coach Scotty Bowman
allow their starts to play without
fear, to be comfortable.
Hockey purists dreaded the idea
of a Philadelphia three-peat fearing
a Flyers victory would forever
CHSS badminton players

There were some good perfor
mances from Central Huron ath
letes at a badminton tournament on
Monday, April, 10.
In seniors mixed doubles Erin
Gibbings and Derek Rozendaal
placed first in their pool but lost in
the semi finals.
In boys doubles Dave Haggit and
Mike Harris came second in their
pool, while Andrew Mount was
undefeated in boys singles, winning
gold.
In juniors mixed doubles Laura
Wright and Jeremy Leppington
won their pool and came in second
overall.

tarnish hockey’s imagery. Success
breeds imitation and a third
consecutive Stanley Cup would
almost certainly change everyone’s
perspective regarding size versus
skill.
The Palmerston 81s mirror the
Flyers methodical system of
conquest. Their leader is a
defenseman whose style of play
exceeds all boundaries. Potentially
one of the league’s best his immense
talent is hidden beneath a career stat
of 792 penalty minutes in 48 games
played.
At the same time Milverton
reflects the Montreal Canadiens
philosophy. To be successful
Harmer and Cherrey would have to
create the same safe working
environment for Fritz and Dietz that
Bouchard and Chartraw did for
Lemaire and Lafleur. The defense
threesome of Ohm, Smith and Fritz
would have to patrol the blueline
with the same determination as
Robinson, Savard and Lapointe
while Eversheds performance would
have to equal that of Drydens.
In the end both Montreal and
Milverton completed four-game
sweeps but while these victories
may lessen the violence it never
eliminates. Although taught to
believe that good will always
triumph our belief in Conn
Smythe’s “if you can’t beat 'em in
the alley, you can’t beat ‘em on
the ice” is so strong that we
continue to accept willful acts of
aggression as simply part of the
game.
his pool and second overall.
Junior girls doubles Ashley Fal
coner and Naomi Amoraal came
second in their pool and played off
with Denise Rozendaal and Angela
Rylaarsdam who won their pool.
Rylaarsdam and Rozendaal went on
to win gold.
In girls singles Jessie Connolly
placed second in her pool and
played off with Lindsay Oesch who
won their pool and went on to win
gold.
“It was Lindsay’s best perfor
mance yet,” said Coach Roba
Lobb.

PeeWee Hawks get silver
The Wingham PeeWee B Hawks
won silver at the OWHA Provincial
Championships in Brampton.
In this round robin action, the
team met Halton Hills Friday, April
14 at 7:30 p.m. for game one.
Wingham jumped out to a 1-0
lead with Michelle Cook taking a
pass from Brittany Campbell then
cutting around the opposing
defenseman and firing a hard wrist
shot past the Halton Hills
goaltender. Cook would put the
Hawks up 2-0 with 1:55 to go in
the first beating the Halton Hill
keeper on the blocker side with a
wrist shot after the feed from
Victoria Whitfield.
Cook and Whitfield would send
Brittany Campbell on a breakaway
at 9:21 of the second and Campbell
would beat the netminder wristing
a shot to the top comer of her glove
side.
Halton Hills scored in the third.
Cheryl Rylett got the point with
Victoria Pruler picking up the
assist. Brittany Campbell closed
out the scoring with an open net
goal set up by Cook. Solid
goaltending by Nicki Berfeltz in
the Hawk net prevented any chance
of a come back for the Halton Hill
team.
In game two on Saturday at 8:20
a.m. the team met Barrie.
Both squads played it tight
defensively in the first period
ending the period with no score.
Cook got the Hawks rolling
snapping a shot past the Barrie
netminder at 4:31 of the second on
a pass by Laurin Hoegy and Nicole
Walker. Campbell put the Hawks
up by two set up by Laura Ritchie
and Danielle Good.
