(Vicky Bremner photo) Deputy Pres, visits Lodge The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge was held on Tuesday, April 11 with special guest (on her official visit) Sister Mavis Atthill, District Deputy President of Huron District #23. Also attending were other sisters from Exeter. Sister Mavis’s message conveyed making meetings more fun, getting new members and working towards special projects such as Rainbow Lake, which is a camp for children with cancer and other needy charitable works. Sisters Elva Brown, Lorraine Edwards and Laura Barbour attended the District meeting at Exeter on Wednesday, April 12. Following the meeting a humorous skit called The Tater Family was performed with all participating dressed in specially designed Easter hats. A Note from Betty Well, are your Easter plans all set? Ralph Pearson and Kay Rutledge are happy to be home from hospital in their own wee beds. The high school seniors are waiting patiently for the letter that gives them their future place of learning. We hope you all get your first choice. Speaking of high school, students at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham hosted a coffee house last week with proceeds going to the cancer society. The Gropp sibs were among those performing. Ashley sang Fiona Apple’s Shadow Boxer, accompanied on guitar by baby brother Joshua, who then did an original piece for banjo and Green Day’s Good Riddance, Time of Your Life. Sign thrown through window On April 15 just before noon damage was reported at a resident on County Rd. 86 in Grey Twp. Someone during the night, had taken a red/white yield sign along with metal post and tossed it through a window of a vacant home. A person living next door to the damaged property found the smashed window. A potluck dinner was enjoyed after which Peggy Keffer presided over the meeting. The roll call was to reveal Sunshine Sisters. Some arrange­ ments were made for the District annual to be held on May 9 in Walton Hall at 9:30 a.m. Members were reminded of the casserole supper and euchre on Thursday, April 27 with proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Shirley Wheeler was the guest speaker. She gave many pointers on the care of ornamental trees, perennials and annuals. The perennial bed should be started in the fall and the first year plant annuals. In due time, perennials need to be divided. She gave many tips on the care of roses. They do not mix well in beds with other plants and need to be dusted every 10 days. She commented on houseplants and also made an artificial arrangement. The annual meeting followed with Margaret McMahon installing the officers for 2000 - 2001. They are: past president, Edna McLellan; president, Peggy Keffer; 1st vice, Lucy Hesse; secretary, Leona Armstrong; assistant secretary, Jean Fraser; treasurer, Edna McLellan; program convenor, Lucy Hesse; public relations officer, Doris McCall; Tweedsmuir curators, Kathy Bridge and Doris McCall. Congratulations Janice! Judges comments: A very good retrospective of what education used to be from both a teaching and learning perspective and the changes that have taken place in the last 100 years. A variety of quotes must have brought back many fond memories for the readers.
