Brussels students, teacher visit France city. “It was the size of London or Kitchener,” added Menzi. Jessica had a picturesque setting in which to reside as her host family lived in a two-storey house, 20 min utes from Caen, by the ocean. She thought it was quite coinci dental that her host parents are den tists as are her own and her exchange partner’s name was also Jessica. Her biggest surprise was learning the family had two pet snakes about which she was not warned. “I just liked talking to my exchange partner. I could finish her English sentences. It was really fun.” Jessica says it was really weird hearing them fight in French as the brother and sister fought all the time. It was a wonderful cultural experi ence for the girls, said Menzi. However, they did see the English influence as most of the music they heard had English words. While the French made great efforts to speak English, the students said they had a difficulty making conversation in French. They under stood what was being said, but had to work really hard to form a sentence in response. Though the girls did not attend classes in France, they were amazed that even the elementary schools had cafeterias. Classes ran as late as 5 p.m. some days and junior grades attend school Saturday mornings. Situated in an urban area, the girls noticed there were no school buses. Transportation was provided by city buses. They also learned that the grades were reversed. Classes started at Grade 13 and finished with Grade 1. Among the highlights of their trip was the one day lay-over in Paris, walking the stairs of the Eiffel Tower, the wonderful gardens, war memorials and hearing the history of World War II. The girls all enjoyed spending time with their host families and look forward to being reunited with their new friends when the return exchange occurs from April 27 to May 7. The group will be visiting Toronto, Niagara Falls, conservation -authori ties, farmers’ markets, SkyDome, Sportsworld, going bowling and enjoying a pig roast. Course catalogue 1-800-665-7044 www.counselortraining.com w By Janice Becker Citizen staff It was the chance of a lifetime for three students from Brussels Public School when they accompanied their teacher on an 11 -day trip to France. Rachel Elliott, Emily Cardiff and Jessica Spink earned the privilege of taking part in an exchange program set up by the principal and a teacher at Elma Logan Public School. Brussels Public School French teacher Priska Menzi, says the girls had to apply to the program and then, due to the large number of students from across the region showing interest, they were interviewed. In talking with the students, it is obvious how much they enjoyed the trip, as they bubble over with answers while giving their experi ences which countered someone else’s. While staying in Caen, in the province of Normandy, each of the girls boarded with a different family. Emily stayed in a duplex with a family of five. The parents were col lege teachers. All the girls were surprised at how late supper was eaten, 8 p.m. being a regular time. “They just ate and went straight to bed,” said Rachel. The diet was also different than what the students were accustomed to. “They ate a junkfood breakfast,” said Rachel. “They had chocolate cereal with warm chocolate milk.” “The parents ate bowls of coffee with sugar,” added Emily. For Rachel, her host family had a connection with North America as the father worked for Nortel and spoke English perfectly. “Paris was the big thing, but my family took me places on the weekends with beauti ful views. Rachel, who marked her 14th birthday in France, says the exchange students will be surprised when they come to this area because they thought they lived in a small COLLECT CASH! Join our team! 1-800- 567-3656 By Kevin Freiburger - Grade 7 In the Grade 7/8 room, the class has just finished doing a health unit on drugs. They made charts and filled in information about six differ ent types of drugs, like alcohol, mar ijuana, heroin, acid (LSD), tobacco and ecstasy. Some of the information came from the BBC Education website, GOTOBUTTON BM_1_ http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/id/. In geography, the class has learned about absolute location and relative location by making a graph of their seats. They then had to find where they sat on the graph, then where they were compared to someone else. They also had to pick a place where they’d like to go for a vaca tion, and describe the differences between their home, and their vaca tion choice. For music, the class has been doing STOMP. The students got into bands and made up band names. Then they had to get items from around home, bring them in and make music with them. They were allowed to have one real instrument, but the rest had to be found objects. The STOMP bands performed in the gymnasium and the results were videotaped for peer evaluation. If one were to look down the school halls, a number of posters encouraging taking care of the Environment would be seen. Earth Week is April 17-22. Thanks, Grade 7/8 for the reminders! The Scholastic Book Fair is at school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. Parents may come in to see the books according to their children’s schedule or at the special family time from 3:30 - 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The JK/SK classes and Grade 1 /2s will be traveling to Wingham Heritage Theatre on Thursday to see Cindy Cook from the Polka Dot Door television programme. On Friday, the school bids farewell to Mrs. Martin for a while as she goes on leave to be with her family while awaiting the arrival of its newest member. CAREER OPPS.
