Gospel
story
By Janice Becker

Attending the play Bookmark will
allow patrons to learn not only about
the gospel of Mark, but also about
the man who wrote the words.
Presented by Blyth and area
churches, Bookmark tells the story
of Mark as he interviewed people
about the time of Jesus’ ministry,
being too young himself to remem
ber the events, says play director
Tom Bailey. “It is surmised this is
how Mark put together his gospel.”
Bailey says that historians believe
Mark wrote the stories for his own
personal journal then decided to use
them to benefit others.
The play is set in the time of the
burning of Rome, around 50 AD,
about 20 to 25 years after Christ was
crucified.
Following Les Cook’s suggestion
to get a group going, Bailey says the
play was chosen because it was felt
it was appropriate for the Easter sea
son.
The cast consists of eight youth
and one adult from Blyth, Brussels
and Clinton with support from the
Blyth Church of God, Christian
Reform and Catholic churches as
well as the Missionary Church in
Auburn.
As well as Bailey directing the
production, his wife Gail is handling
set and costume design and publici
ty, a couple of parents are looking
after props, Robin Sanders is doing
the tech and lighting design and
Marion Cook is providing squares
and coffee.
When trying to decide what organ
ization should benefit from monies
raised, Bailey says there was very
little consideration needed.
“I am a supporter of the Food
Grains Bank and so are several of
the local churches. It was a very
good choice, particularly at this time
of the year.”
He also said people attending ben
efits like to know their money is
going to a specific cause.
Though the Food Grains Bank
will be the beneficiary of the pro
duction, Bailey says that is the main
reason for the play. “It is for out
reach, to take the message of Christ
to the community.”
Bookmark will be presented at
