Brussels councillor rejects proposal By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff A suggestion for promotion of the village as part of the newly-amalga mated Municipality of Huron East got some fairly strong opposition from at least one Brussels councillor at the April meeting, Monday night. The problem was money. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White explained that she had met with rep resentatives from the Seaforth Business Retention Committee regarding a rural ventures office for the new municipality. Funding is available from the province in the amount of $50,000 with the condi tion that the municipality match that amount. Only three areas were cho sen for the plan, said White. “It sounds like a good plan. The province is watching the develop ment.” White said she told the representa tives there was no room ir this year’s budget. However, Grey Twp.’s Clerk-Treasurer Brad Knight, who was also at the meeting, suggested that the three per cent working fund reserve required by the five former municipalities could be reduced by the necessary amount. Brussels portion would be between $6,000 and $10,000. Deadline for the application is April 30. White explained that the $100,000 would be to physically set up an office to work on the promotion of the municipalities. The representa tives are planning on attending the Huron East transition committee meeting to provide an overview. White said that it could benefit the village as the industrial land could be promoted through this. They would also work with business and manu facturing groups already established. Councillor Joe Seili however, wondered how much effort would go into promoting Brussels rather than Seaforth. “I’m concerned my tax dollars are going to something that will compete with me. We cut back on everything then set up funds for this.” Noting that she had only provided a brief overview, White assured Seili that the program sounded like a good one. Seili said he didn’t have any doubts about that, but felt uncom fortable putting money into adminis trative paperwork. “You take $6,000-$ 10,000 out of operating funds for this, then we walk over breaks in the sidewalks.” When Councillor Greg Wilson also expressed some misgivings for the same reason as Seili, White once again said she felt the program was worthwhile. “But I understand you like to see something more physical. You like to look out the door and see what you did with your money. But it was good of them to come to us with this.” Seili agreed. “But, it’s tough. We’re always being told the govern ment doesn’t have money, then they suddenly have money for things like this. I’m not comfortable spending money this way.” OPP investigate theft of auto in Seaforth On April 2 at 7:30 p.m. a motor vehicle was reported stolen from Main Street in Seaforth.
