Lynn Nichol Knox Cranbrook I think most of us pray at some time or another. Some people who wouldn’t think to pray at any other time find that a prayer just blurts itself out in a crisis. The deer bursts into the headlights on the road at night, and the words, “Lord, no!” come out, without us even thinking. The child has to have a biopsy - and even those who aren’t sure about God will say, “if you’re ready there, and you’re listening. BEATTIE George Beverley Beattie was bom Nov. 25, 1912 in Wingham, one of four children of Robert D. Beattie and Olive Carling Mason. George was a man with many gifts and great talents and used them for the good of his family, town, county and country. He began his career by going to Embalmers School in Toronto and received his funeral directors license in 1933 at the age of 21. George then came to Clinton to work with Sutter and Perdue in the funeral service. However being the strong willed, energetic, independ ent young man that he was and with his love for Clinton he decided to open his own funeral service and furniture business in 1934. In 1939, he married the love of his life, Effie Laidlaw and as they began their life together, it was only a short time before he opened Clinton’s first Blyth United hears of God’s houses please don’t let it be cancer.” Even some people who tell me they don’t believe in God also tell me they have running conversations with God in their heads. For those who choose to incorpo rate prayer consistently into their lives, there are many benefits. It makes us more aware of other peo ple’s struggles. It helps us gain insight into our own problems. It reminds us who’s really in charge of our lives, and makes us thankful for all the blessings God gives. It gives funeral home at 55 Rattenbury St. in 1942. In his wisdom he saw yet another need for the area, and with in three years opened the first ambu lance service. He continued in the funeral serv ice until 1971 and received his life membership (50 years) with the Ontario Funeral Service Board in 1983. George operated the furniture store from 1934 to 1962, a total of 28 years. George lost his spouse of 36 years, Effie in 1975. His compassion and love of his family and their support were there to get him through the next 25 years. George was both president and past president of the Lions Club when the first arena was built. George was chairman of the cemetery board when they built the mausoleum. He was a man of deep faith, his religious beliefs were very meaningful, being a life-long mem ber of the Wesley-Willis United Church as well as other fraternal organizations. George loved music and played the trumpet in the Clinton and Dashwood Trumpet Band. He loved his cottage on Lake Huron which he had for many years. George spent his last five years at Huronview, which was very difficult for him. He was not accustomed to being dependent on others after the opportunity to examine our lives, confess what we have done wrong, and be freed of guilt that might oth erwise paralyze us. Prayer also gives us something to do when a situation is beyond our control, when there really isn’t any thing else we can do. As I write this, I just spent part of the morning going through prayer requests that were collected at a church-related meeting last week. We stopped the business of the meet ing long enough for anyone who leading such a full life, there was not much to look forward to as each day dawned. His comfort was irj listen ing to music and having his family by his side. He passed away peacefully at Huronview, Clinton, on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 in his 88th year. He was predeceased by his loving wife Effie (nee Laidlaw) in 1975. He .was the dear father of David (Mary Jean) Beattie of Clinton and Beverley (John) Elliott of Blyth. He will be remembered fondly by grandchildren Rick (Anne) Elliott, Neil (Lisa) Elliott, Bryan (Fayeanne) Beattie and Lisa Beattie, and great-grandchildren Heather, Jeff, Jordan and Chad. George was predeceased by his sisters Nora and Helen and a brother Jack. He was the dear brother-in-law of Jean Livermore and Roberta Lavis, Clinton. Friends called at the Wesley- Willis United Church, Clinton on Sunday, March 19, 2000 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. where the funeral service was held at with Rev. William McAuslan offici ating accompanied by Pastor Fran Donohue. Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home, Clinton in conjunction with Elliott- Madill Funeral Home, Mt. Brydges were entrusted with the arrange ments. wished to write a request on a slip of paper, then we collected them. There is a special committee which will pray for these requests. In going through the slips of paper, I was struck by the thoughtfulness and caring of the people who had written the requests. Obviously, these people care deeply about the many issues and people they wrote about. Even to know that they care is important somehow. It made me think that perhaps one of the best things we can do for someone who is in trouble is to pray for them, and tell them that’s what we’re doing. Then, even if they believe the prayer has no effect, they will know that we care. And if prayer is effective in other ways too, it certainly can’t hurt, can it? The Way Band provided music for the congregation. Rick Howson read the gospel les son John 2: 13-25. Gerald and Nancy Hakkers were welcomed into the Blyth United Church by transfer of membership. The scripture lesson was Romans 8: 9-17. The sermon was entitled God’s House: in Church and Me. Rev. Dow talked about how there is more than one way to talk about “God’s House”. One is referring to the church. The other is God’s house in people. Rev. Dow talked about how having God’s house inside is both a privilege and an obligation. He made the congregation think how if something is not appropriate in God’s house, the church, it does not belong in God’ house in them. He also reminded that even when church buildings are gone, there is still God’s other house. Rev.
