Gaunt receives award Applications available for Spring Credit Advance Prog. Local broadcaster and agriculture supporter Murray Gaunt has been recognized for his contribution to the pork industry. Gaunt, along with Dr. W. Douglas Morrison, received the Ontario Pork Industry Award of Merit at the annual meeting, March 15. Known to listeners of CKNX Radio, Gaunt was raised on a short horn farm near St. Helens and grad uated from the Ontario Agricultural College in animal and poultry hus bandry. As an MP from 1962 to 1981, Gaunt served as the agriculture and environment critic for the Liberal party. His concern for agriculture has been recognized many times, having earned a life-time membership on the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and honoured for his outstanding contribution by the Huron County Federation of Agriculture. He is an active member of the OAC ing Countries Farm Radio Network and Broiler Hatching Egg and Chick Commission. Commenting on Gaunt’s pork industry award, Ontario Pork Chair Will Nap said, “(He) has been a friend to the pork industry for many years, through his service in the government and most recently in the media. A familiar voice on CKNX Radio, Murray has gained the repu tation of being a fair reporter dedi cated to the agricultural communi ty” Dr. Morrison was recognized for his career in research and animal agriculture. A graduate of OAC, Morrison joined the University of Guelph’s animal sci ence department in 1971 as profes sor and chair. After his retirement, he was named Professor Emeritus in 1993. Both recipients were given framed certificates and a limited edition James Lumbars print of a Alumni Association, Develop-rural scene. Application forms for the Government of Canada’s Spring Credit Advance Program will be available March 24. Under the new program, farmers will be able to apply for up to $20,000 in interest-free loans. Farmers who apply must also partic ipate in the crop insurance program or another program that provides similar protection in situations where provincial crop insurance is not available. The applications will be available at most local elevators for wheat and barley in the Canadian Wheat Board area, the Agricultural Commodity Corporation in Ontario and, in the case of other crops, from participating producer organizations across the country. Payments to producers under the act come in the form of loans guarantee'd by the Government of Canada and are administered through local producer groups and the Canadian Wheat Board. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will sign guarantee agree ments with the Canadian Wheat Board and the producer organiza tions administering the program to secure the funds borrowed from their lenders for issuing the advances to the producers. The Government of Canada will guaran tee the loans and pay the interest on up to $20,000 of advances issued to individual producers. The Government of Canada has made available $2.3 billion in farm assistance since December 1998 and is committed to the future of Canadian agriculture and rural com munities. This commitment includes: continuing to fight for an end to price distorting international agricultural subsidies, reforms to transportation that will reduce costs to farmers and providing an addi tional $1 billion over two years in addition to the $600 million per year dedicated to safety net pro grams.
