The squad met Dorchester in the first matchup and though Dorch­ ester hit the board early, goalie Nic Gowing shut them down for the rest of the game. Brussels was fired up and ready to go with Matt Huether leading the way. He struck for three goals in his first shift then added eight more before the final buzzer. Brendan Stretton put the puck over the crease three times while Gavin Bowers and Ray Huether each added one. Assists went to R. Huether, Daniel Elliott, Robert Cronin, Stretton and Herbie Runst- edler. M. Huether was named Brussels’ most valuable player. Chris Becker kicked off the scor­ ing against Embro. With a netter by M. Huether, the squad finished the first period in a 2-2 tie. M. Huether put Brussels ahead in the second, but Embro regained the lead. M. Huether pulled Brussels into a tie at the 2:15 mark, forcing an overtime period with the goalies pulled. R. Huether netted the win­ ner with Becker earning the assist. Ty Sebastian, in net, received the most valuable player award. Advancing to the A champi­ onship, Brussels met a tough Hen- sall squad. Huether passed to Stretton for a tying goal in the first. After a score by Hensail, Stretton struck again to bring Brussels even. Hensall hit for two before the buzzer. With three consecutive goals by M. Huether, Stretton and R. Huether, Brussels had the lead, but lost the match when Hensall retali­ ated with two netters in the final minutes. R. Huether was named most valuable player as the squad came away A champ runners-up. The Tykes travelled to Tara, March 17 for a round-robin tourna­ ment. Meeting Ripley in their first game, the team came out strong, shutting out their opponent and scoring 18. Goals were scored by Stretton (two), M. Huether (six), R. Huether (five), Runstedler, Sebastian, Bow­ ers (two) and Zwep. Assists went to Bowers, Stretton and Becker. Cronin was steady in net. Zach Watson was named MVP. In a tighter second match, Brus­ sels went up against Owen Sound. Gowing had an excellent game between the posts, stopping all but three of Owen Sound’s shots. Coach Haggitt commended his players for excellent effort through­ out the playoffs. Head over heels It was a rough and tumble contest between Alvinston and Blyth Midgets on Saturday afternoon as they battled for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship. The home squad glided, with few upsets, to a 4-0 shellacking of their visitors. (Vicky Bremner photo) Skaters bring home medals On March 4 and 5, Brussels and area skaters travelled to Simcoe and took part in the Western Ontario Section Interclub Championships. Drew Thomas and Michelle Smith of the Brussels Club placed fourth in the Pairs Competition. Jamie Lewis and Michelle Cook of the Blyth Club, Ashley Warwick of the Wingham Club and Jeff Hulley of the Mitchell as well as Drew Thomas from the Brussels Club, all gave strong performances in their single divisions, placing between Fight you for it A Brussels and Chesley Atom struggle for the puck during last week’s game in Brussels. The two teams finished with two goals apiece in this round robin contest. The home squad played Lucknow on Tuesday to determine whether they move on to a playoff series. Ashley Sholdice of Brussels received a bronze medal in Pre-Preliminary “A” Ladies. Bridget Blake, also of Brussels, won a gold medal for her performance in Pre-Preliminary “B” Ladies. Ashley Warwick of the Wingham Club placed fifth in Preliminary C Ladies. Michelle Cook of Blyth placed fourth in Junior Bronze “B” Ladies and Jamie Lewis of Blyth won a gold medal for her strong program in Senior Bronze “B” Ladies. “It has been a very rewarding and successful season for all the skaters in our home town clubs,” said Coach Michelle Blake. Sting tops Auburn The Sting walloped Auburn in Blyth Industrial League hockey. Scoring the 11 Sting goals were Steve Siertsema (four), Jack Wat­ son (three), Don Allen (two). Doug Craig and Brent Brooks. Hitting the twine for Auburn were Ryan Chamney with three and Ben Craig with two. The Bulldogs and Stars played to a 10-10 tie. Bulldog scorers were Brian Marks (four), Robb Finch (two), Darryl Bromley (two), Mark Wilson and Mike Bromley. Making the mark for the Stars were Murray Thompson (three), Scott Bromley (three), Kirk Stewart (two) and Chad Haggitt (two).
