Members of the 1978 Wingham Ironmen Jr. C. squad won the Canadian Adult Recreational Hock ey World Cup this past weekend in Vancouver, B.C. The champi onship was held from March 5-12. Their first contest was March 6 at noon against Slovenija Trim 35’s. They glided to a 9-1 victory. March 8’s match-up was at 7:45 a.m. against Alberta’s Richmond Almet- co Vintage Vets whom they edged 4-3. Friday afternoon they faced-off against Holm’s Slackhawks from B.C. It was again a close one, but a victory nonetheless, as they came out on top of a 3-2 score. That put them in first place for Group two and up against the fourth-place overall B.C. Zippers in the semi-final. Holding on to their edge the veteran Ironmen took this one 2-1. Proving that Canucks can still rule a rink, they skated to a 3-1 fin ish against Finland’s Kerva Red Senators in the championship round. The 2000 CARHA World Cup is the largest, most prestigious inter national adult recreational hockey tournament of its kind. A total of 135 teams from around the world competing in 19 divisions were present. The special feature game was the Gillette Challenge Cup, between the Calgary Flames and the 30th anniversary Canucks alumni, NHL retired greats. The Purple Tykes haven’t had a game for a couple of weeks and they were chomping at the bit to face some competition. They got their wish as these two competent teams gave the fans a game to cheer about. Purple hopped on the scoreboard first with a shot from Sheldon Reid that slid past White net minder Collin Whitfield. Reid scored his second a couple of shifts later assisted by accurate passes from team mates Tyler Middegaal and Kirby Cook. Frenzied action from end to end was noted until sharpshooter Adam Cronin pulled Whitfield aside and stuck the puck in the corner. Passing the puck back and forth and keeping the White defence busy Colin Bokhout and Cronin manoeuvred to keep the activity fast around the White net. Tyler Black jumped on a loose puck and shoved it across the line to strengthen the lead by four goals. The White team mustered their team and shot three fast goals, by Tyler Stevenson, past Purple netminder Grant Sparling, who had so far frustrated the opposing team by thwarting many attempts. Sparling curbed further White rushes with the help of vital defence work from Matt Chalmers, Lukas Witherspoon, Aaron Popp and Mathew Popp. Cronin sealed the Purple victory with a final goal assisted by Kayla Black and Bokhout to retire the game at a 5-3 score. Fans enjoyed the well played game and are looking forward to some spring break action at a tournament in Bayfield. It was a successful weekend for the Blyth Novice squad when they travelled to Teeswater for a tourna ment. Challenging Clifford in their first game, Blyth took an early lead, notching two in the first off the sticks of Johnathon McDowell and Tony Bean. Byron Broome and Curtis Robertson assisted. Clifford captured the lead in the second, popping in three fast ones before Blyth could retaliate. Bean evened the score before the buzzer. Clifford struck first in the third, but were then held off the board to allow Blyth to regain the win. Goals from McDowell, and Robertson (two) sealed the 6-4 vic tory. Robertson and Lee Watkins earned assists. In their second contest, Blyth slid by Ripley with a 4-3 score. Down 3-0 early in the third Blyth pulled off a tie when Roman Sturzenegger, Kenny Plunkett and McDowell netted the puck. Brett Courtney and Bean assisted. A goal by Derek Youngblut in the shootout earned Blyth a spot in the A final. Blyth took the championship game to a shoot out as well after Plunkett tied the game with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation and overtime was fruitless. Bean had scored Blyth’s other two net- ters. McDowell scored the winner. Anthony Peters was unbeatable in net and Matthew Stevenson, Claren Yuill and Youngblut were strong on defence. Atom Reps win, tie The Brussels Atom Reps played Hensall twice this weekend and came away with a tie and a win. Friday night, Christopher Jutzi started the scoring with only 31 seconds left in the first period when Matt White set him up in front of the net. Jutzi was there ready for a pass and tipped it in. With only 12 seconds remaining in the first period, James Roberts who had been playing at the top of his game, took a hard shot at the net on a pass from Jordan Campbell to score the second goal. Hensall got their first goal early in the second period which was answered by a Brussels goal five minutes later. Roberts once again was waiting at the side of the net and received a pass from White to go ahead by two goals. In the third period, Hensall scored two goals. They evened the number of goals scored in the last second of the game to finish it at three-all. Saturday the Atoms team travelled to Hensall. Doug Schnock started the scoring by getting two goals on one shift in the first period. White set Schnock up for both goals. White was on a roll and early in the second period scored his own goal on a pass from Schnock. Mere seconds later, White was waiting for another opportunity to score and Cory Chapman set him up with a pass from the blue line. Hensall had a chance to score their* first goal of the game in the third period. Stephen Ropp took advantage of a power play when Jutzi set him up for his first goal of the day. Hensall scored their last goal of the game before White scored his hattrick on a pass from Campbell. The final score of the game was 6 - 2 for Brussels. The next Atom Rep game will be Wednesday night against Chesley in Brussels. FILL YOUR Bunch (Prod, of USA Canada #1 CELERY at Scrimgeour Food Market Blyth 523-4551 Prod, of Ont.
