The old and the new The 1992-93 OMHA Blyth Bantam goalie was in top form Saturday as his team faced off against the 2000 Blyth Midgets in a fundraiser to take the young Bulldogs to Montreal. The veterans showed what made them champions years ago, edging the Midgets in this friendly contest. Atom Bulldogs advance Wingham Hawks The Blyth Atom Bulldogs advanced to the next level of play­ offs after finishing Paisley March 8. Game I was played in Paisley, March 1 where the home team dou­ bled Blyth. In spite of an early lead by Blyth, Paisley hit hard late in the second to secure the win. Blyth scorers were Josh Albrech- tas, Richard Gregg and John Bokhout. Assists went to Krysto- pher Campbell, Blake Hesselwood and Darcey Cook. Blyth rebounded in the second contest? taking the game 3-2. Devin Jenkins scored the first goal on a great second effort, pick­ ing up the rebound off his own shot and sneaking it by the goalie. Assists went to Cody Reid and Justir Dobie. Cook put the home squad up by two when he took a wrist shot just inside the Paisley blueline and beat a surprised netminder. Bokhout and Hesselwood earned assists. Paisley battled back to sco?e twice and lie the tight match. Gregg gave the Bulldogs the vic­ tory when he picked up an Albrech- tas rebound and stuffed it in the net. Jeff Elliott did a splendid job in Stars down Auburn The Stars shone bright when they played Auburn in the Blyth Indus­ trial Hockey League game on Fri­ day night. Chad Haggitt with two goals led the Stars scoring with Mike Haggitt and Scott Bromley tallying one each. Steve Plunkett bulged the twine for the lone Auburn marker. The Stars edged the Chiefs on Sunday 5-4. Scoring for the win­ ners were Mike Haggitt with a hat- trick, Murray Thompson and Rick Elliott. Darren McCash, Ben Lobb and Dennis Vere scored for the Chiefs. In the game between the Bull­ dogs and Auburn, the Dogs came up on top with a 9-5 victory. The series was forced to a third and deciding game, March 8 in Paisley. The Bulldogs came out with all their cylinders firing. Joel Salverda frustrated the Paisley shooters, pre­ venting them from getting into the game. Blyth scorers were Bokhout (two), Albrechtas, Hesselwood and Cook (two). Assist went to Cook (three), Brittany Peters, Salverda, Bokhout (two), Kendall Whitfield, Brandon Kellington and Hessel­ wood. With the 6-3 win, the Bulldogs advanced to the next series against Keady. In the first of a best-of-five series, Blyth doubled their oppo­ nent. Though the Bulldogs fell behind in the first, a strong second and third period resulted in the win. Scoring for Blyth were Hessel­ wood (two), Albrechtas, Cook, Campbell and Bokhout. Assists were earned by Cook (two), Bokhout (three), Elliott, Peters (two), Dobie and Albrechtas. Elliott faced a lot of shots in net, but was up to the challenge, stop- Finch and Jamie Black. Ryan Chamney, Brent Andrews, Jason Rutledge, Steve Plunkett and Mark Stoll tit the light for Auburn. This week’s action has the Sting against Auburn and the Stars fac­ ing-off against the Bulldogs. Midgets in OMHA final The Blyth Midget Bulldogs have advanced to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association finals after defeating Woodville Friday night. The team took the best of five series in three straight, but decided­ ly close games, all won by one goal. The final was 2-1 in favour of the Dogs. They now face Alvinston away Thursday with a rematch tentative­ ly scheduled for Saturday in Blyth. With two netters by Brittany Campbell, the Hawks took the 2-1 win. Nicki Berfeltz had a splendid game in net, making many out­ standing saves. Assists went to Michelle Cook and Ashley Ritchie. The team eould never get on track against Elma-Logan, Feb. 26, as their opponent dominated them from the start. Wingham lost 3-0. Two goals by Campbell and an empty netter by Nicole Stewart put the Hawks in a position to advance to the provincials if they could beat Elma-Logan in their next meeting. Cook and Danielle Good earned assists and Berfeltz got the shutout. Wingham met Elma-Logan, March 7 ready for the challenge. With Berfeltz strong in net and an inspired defence and offense, the squad mounted a 4-1 win. Scorers were Cook and Campbell (three). Assists went to Ritchie, Cook (two). Good and Brandy Thomp­ son.
