Diabetes is a chronic disease whereby the body is unable to produce or effectively use insulin, a hormone needed for the body to convert fopd into energy. Its causes are not yet understood. There are three types of diabetes: • Type 1 occurs when the body produces very little or no insulin. Treatment requires daily, life-sustain ing injections of insulin, a regulated diet and daily exercise. • Type 2 occurs when the body is unable to efficiently use the insulin it produces. This type can be controlled with a planned diet and exercise program, but some people may need to take insulin. Gestational diabetes devel ops during pregnancy and can occur in up to 10% of all pregnancies. The hormones produced by the placenta block the body’s use of insulin. While it usually disappears when a woman gives birth, up to 40% of these women may develop diabetes in later life. tally card draws, Margaret Long, Ken Crawford, Isabelle Bremner, Stewart Musgrove, Marguerite Beirnes, Jim Smith, Erma Brighton, Rob Bremner, Margaret MacDonald, Jeanne Ireland, Bernice MacFarlane, Allan Kennedy, Isabelle Gray, Grace Stewart, Margaret Bateman, Ken MacDonald, Edna Reddon, Iola Subject.
