Blyth UC
It was World Development and
Relief Sunday on Feb. 20 at Blyth
United Church. The Grade 6 class
was greeters and the seniors
ushered. Karen Giousher was in
charge of the nursery.
Prior to the service Gayle Poore
and Rev. Ernest Dow led the
congregation in a sing-song. The
opening hymn was Thou Whose
Almighty Word.
The Choral Kids sang Here I am,
Lord and Clap De Hands led by
Annie Sparling and Anne Elliott.
Sabrina Buffinga accompanied
them on the piano.
Dohna Moore read the Gospel
lesson Mark 1: 29-39.
The children’s hymn was Shine,
Jesus Shine. The children’s time
centred on the ideas that even if
you are poor, be generous to other
people because it will come back to
you.
Diane Ferguson gave the
highlights of World Development
and Relief. The scripture lesson
was Isaiah 40: 25-31.
The sermon was entitled Mission,
Relief and Compassion Fatigue.
The congregation was reminded
that as the song says “It’s a small
world, after all”, yet there are
billions of people in the world all
with their own unique needs. Rev.
Dow reminded all that “Christ’s
love compels us to live out the
Gospel in practical, caring ways.”
Jesus practised what he preached;
he did not just talk about love, but
demonstrated it, he said.
Another important lesson he gave
was that “if caring, we may soon be
swamped by the world’s need.”
Rev. Dow commented that
sometimes people might wonder if
that means they give to everyone.
This is called “compassion
fatigue”. Jesus shows that it is
through God and people’s
relationship with him that they will
find the secret to priorities.
Doug and Barb Howson, Lloyd
Sippel and Mildred Ament took up
the offering.
Following the service the Sunday
School hosted the annual
Sweetheart Luncheon to raise
money for SWABU1, their foster
child.
