THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2000. PAGE 21. United Church sermon tells of love’s languages Bruce and Candace Howson greeted worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Feb. 13. Ushers were Laurie and Jessica Sparling and Janice and Brittany Peters. Julie Wheeler was in charge of the nursery. Rev. Ernest Dow welcomed everyone and led the congregation in the call to worship, opening prayer and hymn. After the opening prayer the Sacrament of Communion was offered. The Gospel lesson was John 13: 1-5, 12-17. After communion, Rev. Dow called the children forward. The children’s time centred on Valentine’s Day, what love is and how we show it. He used the example of Jesus’ washing the disciples’ feet. The scripture lesson was Proverbs 12: 13-25. The sermon was entitled The Five Love Languages. Rev. Dow reminded all that Jesus is God’s expression of his love for them. Dr. Gary Chapman counsels married couples and has written a book called The Five Love Languages. Rev. Dow asked the congregation to consider the five ways, words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of serving and physical touch as they apply to both our personal relationships, as well as our relationship with God. It was stressed that what is said is important, but also the way that it is said is equally important. “Love makes requests, not demands,” he said. The aspect of togetherness is very important. Quality conversation was also stressed, which centres on listening. Rev. Dow reminded that Jesus was God’s gift to the world. A gift is a visible symbol of love that you give to someone. This is the act of doing something for someone else. Rev. Dow reminded the congregation that “in a time of crisis, touch means so much, and can be the most powerful of all the love languages.” Rev. Dow shared his memory aid Walton PS fourth at meeting By Susan Hundertmark Advance-Times Avon Maitland District School Board trustees picked names of schools from a hat to determine the order school councils will be allowed to.speak Feb. 22 when the board votes on the possible closure of seven district schools. “There was some concern expressed that there might be some for remembering the five ways: “talk, time, tokens, talents, touch.” The sermon concluded by Rev. Dow having the congregation think how “the sacraments employ these languages to communicate God’s love to us.” Bruce Howson, Laurie Sparling, Jeff Peters and Janice Peters advantage to the position people spoke that night and we wanted to be as transparent as possible.” said Education Director Lome Rachlis about the selection of speaking order for the meeting.
