Patterson talks of
simple healings
JoAnn and LeeAnn McDonald
were greeters at Duff’s United
Church on Feb. 13. The
congregation once again welcomed
John Patterson as the guest speaker
for the service.
He announced the death of Rev.
Arthur Higgenbotham, a former
minister at Walton, who died Feb.
6 of a heart attack. A memorial
service was held Sunday at St.
John’s United Church in Oakville.
Mr. Patterson then lent his voice
in singing with the choir, God of
the Sparrow.
His sermon was called, Be
Healed. He pointed out that God
does not always heal in
extraordinary ways or through
miraculous ways but can do so
through simple events.
He told the story about Naaman
who had leprosy and was healed
by dipping seven times in the
Jordon River. He learned about the
healing ability of Elisha by a young
slave girl. It was a servant who
delivered the healing message to
Naaman.
God used ordinary people to help
with the healing, he said.
“Sometimes God is not into the
earthquake or the wind or the tire
but in the still, small voice. He
works among us in simple events,
like reading the Bible, or a quiet
prayer, or an hour of worship on
Sunday morning or through
conversation with friends.”

Hall bd. to attend
Grey council session
The Hall boards of Grey Twp.
have been invited to attend a
meeting at the Grey Twp. offices to
hear how amalgamation of the
various townships and villages will
affect the operation of the
community halls in the area. Grey
Twp. has rhree halls, the Ethel
Community Hall, the Moncrieff
Community Hall and the
Cranbrook Community Hall.
The Cranbrook Community Hall
has been self-sufficient financially.
However the Hall board has had
a difficult time getting people to
serve on the board. Many people in
the community have been very
helpful in running fundraising
events. The number of rentals has
increased.
However the number of Hall
board members has dwindled and
this year two more members are
leaving the Hall board. This leaves
Sharon Evans (president) and Peter
Hagedoorn (secretary) on board.
People from the community are
encouraged to come forward to be
part of the Hall board.
The Cranbrook Hall is available
for rent for $40 per day (with a
$40 security deposit). It has a fully
equipped kitchen and facilities.
Mr and Mrs Tony Terpstra won a
weekend trip to Niagara Falls at the
Valentine’s Dance that was held in
the Brussels arena last week.
Students give speeches
It's time for speeches at Hullett
Central.
As one speech giver last
Thursday moaned, ‘If only we
could skip January!’
All pupils presented a speech or
story to their classmates. Three
pupils from each class were
selected to say their speeches in the
auditorium to a larger audience.
Given the difficult task to choose
winners were Barb Bosman,
Brenda Radford and Paul Ross.
Primary Grades I - 3 could recite
a published story or select an
original topic. Favoured authors
were Canadian writers. Robert
Munsch and Sheree Fitch. Judged
to be the best storytellers were
Caitlin Plant (My Ponytail), Jeff
Gibson (Sleeping Dragons) and
Robyn Kassies (Murmel, Murmel,
Murmel).
Speeches in Grades 4-8 were
original choices by the pupils.
Topics ranged from Egyptian
pyramids to winter sports, family
pets to superstitions.
Selected to advance to the next
competition from the junior level
were Lindsay Gibson (Family
Vacation), Mike Roy (Speeches)
and Rhys Plant (Living in a Family
with HIV).
Chosen from the intermediate
level, Grades 7 and 8, were Tanya
Drost (Being left-handed), Shawn
Drost (Vertically Challenged) and
David Salverda (Winter).
These nine pupils will compete
against winners from Blyth Public
School in the Hullett school
auditorium Wednesday, Feb. 16 at
9 a.m. This event is open to the
public and you would find it a most
interesting morning.
The school is missing Mrs.
McDowell as she was hospitalized
last week with an emergency
appendectomy. They are busy
making get well valentine cards for
her.
It was the letter V for valentine’s
this week for the kindergarten
class. They sang love songs and
read about Cupid. Mrs. Scott
brought in her famous pink
popcorn for all to enjoy. A big
thank you to Wendy Bachert and
Jennifer Vellenga for helping with
the party.
Here is the recipe for the
popcorn: eight cups of cooked
popcorn, 1/4 cup butter, 3 tbsp,
com syrup, 1/2 cup sugar, I pkg.
Jello. Heat butter and syrup. Stir in
sugar and Jello and boil then
simmer for five minutes. Pour over
popcorn and bake for 10 minutes in
a 300° oven. Spread on a cookie
sheet to cool.
The Grade l/2s completed and
presented their science floaters to
the class. Matt Huether and Derick
Bachert designed a floater from a
milk carton that was buoyant
enough to support the mass of 416
pennies.
Other designs sank by the time
they had 30 pennies on them. The
floaters were made from all sort of
recycled materials, i.e. kleenex
boxes, styrofoam meat trays,
cardboard boxes and balloons and
pop bottles.
The phys ed classes participated
in winter carnival activities. They
had crazy carpet and toboggan
races. They had tower building
contests and ski-doo mitt pickup
relays. A good time was had by all
involved.
Mrs. Zwep videotaped all of the
events and also the incredible snow
forts that the children of all ages
participated in making. They got to
watch the video that was made of
the day.

The first place winners were
Boyd and Gertie Driscoll; second

and third place went to Ron and
Jim Smith. The men’s lone hand

A Valentine’s luncheon saw a
nice crowd enjoy delicious beef
stew, salads and tea biscuits with
dessert and coffee.
The annual meeting of the Hall

Congratulations to Derick
Bachert (Grade 2), Jennifer Gerber
(Grade 3), Kyle Griffiths and Laura
Bowers (Grade 4), who were
winners for the speech contest.
They will be going to the Legion
Sunday for the finals. Derick talked
about dog sledding, Jennifer did her
story re-telling about the Difficult
Day, Kyle talked about his pet dog,
Jamie and Laura Bowers’ speech
was about her cat. Good luck kids!
The Grade 4s in science are
working on growing crystals, using
salt and water and a paper clip. So
far not much has happened, but
they are looking for crystals to start
growing on the paper clip.
The whole school enjoyed
skating on Friday. Thank you to all
the parents who came to help tie
skates.
A special gift
Huronlea resident Olive Colwell was overjoyed to receive
a hand-knitted teddy bear from Cathy Ritsema, chapter
co-ordinator for the Huron County Alzheimer Society
during a special St. Valentine’s Day presentation. Twenty-
four bears were knitted by volunteers Willa Rivett and
Joyce Shack of Goderich for donation to people suffering
from Alzheimers or other forms of dementia. The bears
serve as companions and as a sensory tool. This year the
gifts went to residents at Huronlea and Huronview. Just in
its second year, it is hoped the program will expand so
bears can be donated to other nursing homes in Huron
County.
