Brussels Tykes win B
The Brussels Tykes earned the B
championship when they hosted a
tournament Feb. 13.
The squad went up against a strong
Wingham team in the opening round
of play Sunday morning.
In spite of a steady Robert Cronin
in net. Wingham managed to get by
the defenders with speed and agility
for five goals.
Good defensive work by Herbie
Rundstedler, Ryan Baker, Brendan
Stretton, Ty Sebastian, Nic Gowing
and Matt Huether helped keep the
score down. Jordan Roberts was par
ticularly strong as he patrolled the
blueline.
Conner Smith showed a lot of hus
tle and Danny Donkers worked well
along the boards.
Having lost in the first round,
Brussels moved to the B side, to
meet Blyth Purple.
The team found their stride, pop
ping in five in the first period
while goalie Gowing held Blyth
scoreless.
Huether tallied three, while
Stretton and Ray Huether each added
one.
Randy Zwep earned an assist on
the Stretton goal and R. Huether
aided M. Huether on his third tally.
Hard work by Sebastian helped set
up several plays. Cronin and
Sebastian had nice shots on net
stopped.
Nice follow-up play by the
Huethers and Gavin Bowers made
for a great attempt but excellent
goaltending by Blyth’s Grant
Sparling thwarted their efforts.
A diving play by Chris Becker in
front of his net prevented a shot from
getting to Gowing.
Bowers showed good hustle and
passing and Zwep worked hard along
the boards.
Stretton added one late in the final
frame to cap the win.
It was a very exciting contest with
good end-to-end play.
Brussels advanced to the B final
against Mount Brydges where the
scoring continued.
Rundstedler opened the scoring at
10:08 when he took a hard shot from
the side.
R. Huether picked up Stretton’s
rebound less than two minutes later
for the second of the game.
M. Huether put Brussels up 5-0
after earning a natural hattrick.
Rundstedler and Sebastian showed
good speed getting back to defend
the net while Stretton and Cole
McLean went hard for Mount
Brydges’ net.
Cronin was again very strong in
net, grabbing, smothering and
deflecting shots.
Following Stretton’s second of the
game to put the team up 7-0, Mount
Brydges broke the shutout at 12.05
of the second.
M. Huether flipped one in a minute
later only to see the opponent follow
suit.
Though the team allowed three
goals in the final minutes, R. Huether
scored Brussels’ ninth of the contest
for the 9-5 win and the B title.
Hard work by Daniel Elliott, Zach
Watson, Andrew Watson and Morgan
Deitner helped put the team on top.
Roberts had an exceptional tourna
ment, earning the Most Valuable
Player award.
The squad met Goderich in league
play Saturday and though they were
downed 7-2, it was a very good game
for all the players.
Z. Watson set up Brussels’ first
goal when he got the pass to M.
Huether at centre who tallied a netter
and took the score to 2-1.
Great defensive plays were execut
ed by Baker, M. Huether, Roberts,
Becker, Sebastian, Stretton and net-
minder Gowing. Zwep was solid
along the boards.
Down 4-1, M. Huether put in
Brussels’ second goal at 7:12 when
he took it in from his own blueline.
Goderich hit for three in the final six
minutes for the win.

Creek in the Brussels tournament on Sunday. Stoney Creek went on to play in the A
championship. The B title went to the host team. (Ashiey Gropp photo)
