Human Resources Minister Stewart responds to accusations of mismanagement of funds did not follow the requirement that in order for a region to qualify for money from the Transitional Jobs Funds, the area must have a 12 per cent unemployment rate. According to Statistics Canada, the region has only six per cent unem ployment. Past president of the Huron-Bruce Reform Party Doug Fines and other local party members were in Ottawa two weeks ago to “work through the process” of getting out more infor mation on the scandal. Fines stated that the Reform Party and taxpaying Canadians will not stand for such mismanagement of taxpayer dollars. “We are calling for accountabili ty,” said Fines, who added that even Wiarton Willie received a HDRC grant. When asked to comment on the allegations made by the Reform Party, Stewart flatly stated that there is no truth to the accusations. “This is easy to answer because they are completely false,” she said, pointing out that the cessation in pro duction of Massey-Ferguson farm equipment was one of the major cat alysts that led to a high unemploy ment rate in her riding. “There is nothing inappropriate in those investments.” “We have had serious unemploy ment problems. (The grants) have really helped turn the community around,” she explained. The upcoming days and weeks are not expected to be easy for Stewart, as pressure for her resignation increased when parliament went back into session Monday. In addi tion, the audit into mishandling of HRDC grants will continue and increase in scope. However, Stewart said she is com mitted to getting to the bottom of the problem in the HDRC and has the full support of the Liberal caucus to do so. “I’m certainly prepared to ensure the system has the documentation that we need to confirm the good investments that are being made around this country,” she said. Stewart, accompanied by area Member of Parliament Paul Steckle, stated that she was happy to be visit ing the riding and was looking for ward to the evening’s events, which included a dinner and a speech by the minister to the more than 200 in attendance. “It’s great to be in this part of the country and spend some time with the constituents of Huron-Bruce,” said Stewart as she reminisced with Steckle about being elected in 1993. “Paul and I go way back,” added the Ontarian who represents the riding of Brant, including the City of Brantford. Steckle was also very pleased to have Stewart in attendance. “We’ve had this planned for a good number of months,” said Steckle. “Given the weather condi tions and that caucus has been run ning for a couple of days, we are very fortunate to have Jane here with us.” Stewart has been under fire in recent weeks due to the HRDC’s improper allocation of upwards of $ 1 billion in job creation grants. When questioned by the media regarding the current state of her ministry prior to the dinner, Stewart downplayed the situation by stating that things “are well in hand”. “There are no monies missing from human resources, they are invested in their communities in very important programs, but what is missing in some cases is the docu mentation that supports those deci sions,” she explained. The breach of HDRC granting pro tocol came to light when Reform Party MP Diane Ablonczy, Opposition Human Resources Development Critic, brought the matter to the attention of the House of Commons. Since then, the opposi tion has been on the offensive, exposing more examples of improp er grant distribution. One such example alleges that Stewart approved two grants for her own riding against the rules of the Canada Jobs Fund, a press release from Ablonczy’s office stat ed. Of the approximately 55 staffers at one home, at last count 42 had signed, “Even if you want to get the flu shot, you should be opposed to this policy,” said Loder. “It is infringing on our rights as human beings.” Graber said that is the reason she attended a meeting with staff at MPP Helen Johns office recently. “We live in a province that still has freedom of choice.” COUNSELLOR TRAINING INSTITUTE.
