PREVALENCE OF HEART DISEASE
AND STROKE
____ —__________________-— .........................................I ....................—iik— -----------------—
♦ While heart and stroke-related deaths have declined
significantly over the past 10 years, these diseases
still remain the single largest cause of mortality
among Canadians. In 1995, heart disease and
stroke accounted for:
♦ 39% of all Canadian deaths
♦ 79,000 deaths
♦ In comparison, cancer (the second leading cause of
death) accounted for 29% of Canadian deaths.
♦ Although exact figures are not know, it's estimated
that 1 in every 4 Canadians has either some sort of
heart condition, disease of the blood vessels such as
high blood pressure or hardening of the arteries
(atherosclerosis), or stroke-related illness.
♦ Of the 79,000 deaths due to circulatory disease, 56%
are due to coronary artery disease and 20% to
strokes. "Coronary artery disease" includes heart
attacks (28% of all heart and stroke deaths), angina,
and hardening of the coronary arteries
(atherosclerosis).
♦ Because females on average live longer than males,
proportionately more females than males die from
heart disease and stroke, (39% versus 36%
respectively).
♦ The significant decline in heart and stroke-related
deaths seen over the past decades is now expected
to stop, with experts predicting that an upward swing
in mortality rates may re-occur. This is particularly
. true for stroke. The key reason is that our population
♦ is aging rapidly.
♦ 12% of the Canadian population is now over age 65
♦ By year 2016, this proportion will grow to at
least 16%
WARNING SIGNS FOR
HEART ATTACKS
♦ Heaviness, pressure, squeezing, fullness, burning,
tightness, discomfort or pain in the center of
the chest
♦ May spread to the neck, jaw, shoulders,
arm and/or back
♦ May be severe and crushing or may not be severe
♦ Shortness of breath, weakness
♦ Nausea, vomiting and/or indigestion
♦ Sweating and cool, pale, clammy skin
♦ Fear, anxiety, DENIAL
Women may also describe:
♦ Vague chest discomfort or sharp chest pain
♦ Persistent chest discomfort or pain
♦ Light-headedness
If you experience any of these symptoms tell someone
immediately and call 911 or emergency services
in your area.
