Dini Petty comes to Goderich
Strategy
Kerissa VanAmersfoort considers carefully before making
a move in this game of Chinese checkers. The youth was
one of many attending the special night of fun and games
held at Blyth Public School. The event was hosted by the
School Council.
Dini Petty is coming to Goderich -
on Saturday, March 25 for a
luncheon and book signing co
sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority and the Women’s Shelter
of Huron.
Petty is a well-known personality
who has been referred to as the
Oprah Winfrey of Canadian TV.
She will talk about her book A Self
Directed Journey.
The luncheon is to celebrate
women of the community in the
Year 2000. It will be held at the
Knights of Columbus Hall on
Parsons Court in Goderich at 11:30
a.m. on Saturday, March 25.
Michele Hansen, shelter director
said “Women’s Shelter and
Counselling Services of Huron is
delighted to be co-sponsoring a
women’s luncheon featuring one of
Canada’s best known broadcasters.
Complex
committee
soon to call
tenders
Tenders could soon be sought for
the Huron Bruce recreation com
plex as working drawings are near
ing completion.
The $6.4 million project to be
built east of the south-end plaza on
Wingham land was to have five
components, but the squash courts
have been eliminated for now, said
Bill McGrath of the complex pro
ject committee.
The plans will go to contractors
for a bid on the arena, indoor swim
ming pool, fitness centre and
Knights of Columbus Hall.
Before construction can begin, a
management board for the complex
must be set up and the building
committee must review the ten
dered prices to determine the size
and scope of the project, said
McGrath.
Of the $6.4 million price tag.
$5.7 has been raised through corpo
rate donations, service groups and
individuals. Fundraising continues.
Co-hosting Dini Petty is in itself an
honour, but assisting in
disseminating the message of A Self
Directed Journey doubles our
enthusiasm. Ms. Petty will be
promoting a book she co-authored
with Sandra Harding that
encourages women to trust their
own instincts, to build on their self
confidence and to strive for the
highest possible self-esteem. These
messages are consistent with the
mission of the Women’s Shelter of
Huron, and we encourage all
women to join us at this luncheon,
sharing time with other women,
enjoying good food and hearing an
important message.”
Petty will hold a book signing at
Michelle’s Reading Room, 114 The
Square in Goderich after the
luncheon. She will be available to
meet the public from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
For tickets contact Michelle’s
Reading Room at 519-524-4080 or
the Women’s Shelter at 519-524-
5333.

Council approves exploration
Permission was granted by West
Wawanosh council at the Jan. 19
meeting, for Northern Cross
Pipelines Ltd. to conduct gas
exploration tests using a minivib
machine along the road allowance
of Sideroad 15-16, Lots 15 and 16.
Council was told the minivib
machine generates a controlled
vibration without causing damage
to residences or utilities. The vibra
tion is then picked up by a censor.
It eliminates the need to drill holes
and set off dynamite charges.
Brian Treble of the Huron Coun
ty Planning Department attended
council to discuss the matter of
Henry Shetler’s application for sev
erance.
Though application had been
filed to allow the construction of a
second residence on the property,
Treble said a more appropriate
method would be to rezone the
land.
