The annual meeting of the Brussels Agricultural Society was held Jan. 25 with approximately 26 people in attendance. In her opening remarks President Dorothy Cummings gave a brief report on the 1999 fair, and touched on some items that were to be addressed under new business. Sheana Campbell introduced the guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Richard Horst, minister of St. Mary’s Presbyterian Church. Rev. Horst spoke upon the importance of volun­ teers, how volunteer groups help our community, and how to get the best out of volunteering. The president’s report announced some changes to the committee structure of the board of directors for the fair. It has been requested that individuals volunteer to take on spe­ cific functions in the following areas: the Ambassador of the Fair competition, field crop competition, fundraising parade and children’s games, school work, gate admis­ sions, meeting reps and food booths. In order to facilitate the smooth operation of the year 2000 fair it was aJso announced that bi-monthly meetings will be held, involving the executive and heads of the various fair sections. The Ambassador of the Fair, Katie Harrison, spoke briefly about her activities since the fair. She has pre­ sented the fair prizes to the students at Grey and Brussels Public Schools, attended the District 8 annual meet­ ing and is looking forward to the OAAS annual meeting in Toronto next month. She will be participating in the District 8 ambassador compe­ tition, and the Canadian National Exhibition competition in August. The OAAS convention and annual meeting will be held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Feb. 14 to 17. This is the 100th anniversary of the Society. Notice was given that a chaperone is needed for the ambas­ sador. The Brussels Agricultural Society’s fall fair will be Sept. 19 and 20, 2000. Discussion of the theme for the fair resulted in the adoption of “Garlic” as a theme. Ralph and Pat Watson were appoint­ ed auditors for the year. Bill 66, An Act Respecting Agricultural and Horticultural Organizations was discussed. The bill is currently being amended by the provincial government. Society President Dorothy Cummings presented Cardiff with his plaque. Valentine special rates for couples. s Upcoming Events at Brussels Country Inn proposing that grants to Agricultural Societies be revoked, and the tax exempt status currently in place for these societies, be repealed. The OAAS has asked each agricul­ tural society to complete a survey regarding these changes. Brussels Public School student Jessica Spink earned the Murray Cardiff Award from the Brussels Agricultural Society for achieving the most points in the Junior section through a combination of school work and crafts. Jeff Cardiff made the presentation. Samantha Beirnes, a former Grey Central Public School student received the Jeanne Ireland Award for the highest points for school work in the Junior section at last fall’s Brussels Fair. The plaque was presented Jan. 25 at the agricultural society’s annual meeting. Homecraft President Bev Palmer presented the trophy.
