There were nine tables of shoot in play at the Belgrave Community Centre on Friday, Jan. 28. (Ashley Gropp photo) The community extends sympathy to Wilfred Strickler at the passing of his wife Laura Strickler a former resident of Cranbrook. A euchre party will be held Friday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Cranbrook Community Centre. Bring lunch. It was “Bernier Day” in Cranbrook as 13 Bernese mountaindogs and their human companions visited the hamlet last Sunday. The dogs were taken for a run in the fields and one of the human companions running with the dogs fell and broke a clavicle. He was in great pain and could hardly move let alone walk. Many people in the village with all-terrain vehicles were away for the day. The rescue came in the form of Allan Fretz on his skidoo, who brought the injured man to the village. John Nixon and John Dorsch took up the offering. The joint search committee is calling a meeting of the congregation to give a recommendation regarding the Pastoral Church vacancy. The meeting will be held on Feb. 6 following lunch after the service. Y2Play! Skaters compete The 27th annual Great Lakes Winter Skating Festival was held at the Earl Nichols Arena in London. The three-day event ran from Jan. 14 - 16 with several skaters from local clubs participating. Local skaters were Bridget Blake, Michelle Smith and Ashley Sholdice from the Brussels Club; Lindsay Malhiot, Ashley Warwick and Ashley Friendorf from the Wingham club and Michelle Cook and Jamie Lewis from the Blyth club. Blake skated at the Pre­ Preliminary B level and received a silver medal for her performance. Smith, fifth; Sholdice, seventh; Malhiot, fourth; and Friendorf, seventh; skated in Preliminary B, Pre-Preliminary A, Preliminary A, Preliminary A respectfully and all skated strong performances. Warwick earned a gold medal skating at the Preliminary C level. Cook and Lewis skated at the Provincial Qualifying Level. Cook placed fifth in the Junior Bronze Provincial category and Lewis placed third earning her a bronze medal in the Senior Bronze Provincial category. Congratulations goes to the eight skaters who are all coached by Michelle Blake of Brussels.
