Man jailed for driving while suspended
A Dungannon man is spending
weekends in jail for driving while
disqualified.
Robert Kenneth Ohm pled guilty
to the charge in the Ontario Court of
Justice, Wingham, Jan. 20.
According to the Attorney for the
Crown, R. J. Guthrie, police received
a tip Oct. 1 that Ohm, who was pro
hibited from driving for two years as
the result of an impaired conviction
in March, left his house every day at
5:20 a.m. to go to work near
Brussels.
Police stopped him shortly after
5:30 a.m., Oct. 4.
Duty Counsel John Schenk
explained that the 23-year-old had
been working on a Morris Twp. farm
for over two years. He regretted
what he had done but can’t undo the
mistake.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter sentenced
him to 90 days to be served intermit
tently. During that time Ohm is on
probation.
“You get caught driving between
now and the expiration of your con
viction and I suggest you’re looking
at a minimum of six months. And
it won’t be on weekends,” said
Hunter.
Sentenced
Michael Thompson, who pled
guilty in November to assault
charges was given three 30 day sen
tences to be served consecutive for a
total of 90 days intermittent.
During his incarceration he is on

The witness said Stephens went
through a stop sign, never having

taken to hospital.
Stephens’ breathalizer readings
later were 118.
Counsel asked for a pre-sentence
report. Stephens handed over his
license.
Drunk driving
A Howick man is in jail for 90
days.
Guthrie said Murray Thornton,
RR1, Gorrie was talking to a police
officer on the phone Nov. 10 when
he said he was going to a house
where his wife was staying and that
there would be trouble.
The officer, believing Thornton to
be intoxicated went to the house and
seeing him drive up followed him.
Breathalizer readings were 260.
Guthrie said Thornton was
released on the condition he not
drink. It was noted that Thomton did
not comply having been drinking on
Nov. 26 and on four separate occa
sions between Dec. 11 and Jan. 1.
He has prior convictions from
February 1989 and December 1992.
Counsel Mike Donnelly said the
37-year-old farmer had been in cus
tody for almost three weeks. He
noted that Thornton’s family was
trying to get him an appointment for
assessment and treatment in an alco
hol abuse program.
Hunter sentenced him to 75 days
on the drunk driving and 15 days
consecutive for the Dec. 11-Jan. 1
charge. He got 15 days concurrent
for the Nov. 26 charge.
In addition to losing his license for
one year, Thomton got probation for
12 months and must attend a centre
within 30 days of his release for
assessment then follow with recom
mended counselling.
“You don’t attend for the assess
ment and you’ll be in breach of pro
bation and back before me,” said
Hunter. “Let’s put it this way — 90
days in total is the bottom of the
scale. You don’t attend and I’ll cer
tainly make up the difference.”
Cause disturbance
Andrew Henderson entered a plea
of guilty for causing a disturbance.
Guthrie said the Listowel man was
involved in a fight in front of the
Wingham Inn in the early morning
hours of Nov. 20. A crowd which
had gathered to watch the fight, was
dispersed by police when they
arrived.
Henderson was fined $200 and
given three months to pay.
