Tykes play in tourney
The Blyth Atoms had a tough
time in exhibition play against
Teeswater, Jan. 17 losing 7-1 to
their hosts.
Darcey Cook, sent in by John
Bokhout got things started sliding a
shot that the Teeswater defense car
ried into the net, giving Blyth an
early lead in the first period.
Unfortunately that was the end of
the scoring for Blyth as charged-up
home squad glided to victory.
Jeff Elliott and Joel Salverda split
the duties in the Bulldog net.
In the first round of WOAA play
off action the team was edged by a
visiting Belmore squad, Jan. 20.
Bokhout slipped a shot over the
Belmore netminder on a pass by
Cook and Brittney Peters to tie the
game in the first.
After Belmore jumped ahead
again, Bokhout tied it once more on
a nice pass by Blake Hesselwood
and Josh Albrechtas in the second
period.
The final Blyth goal came in the
third. Bokhout took a pass from
Albrechtas then in Gretzky-like
style from behind the net fed Cook
who brought the squad within one
of their opponents.

on a well-played game.
Game two was in Belmore, Jan.
22 and the visitors took this one by
7-1.
Bokhout banked one off the

early lead. He then picked up a
rebound and dumped it in the net.
Belmore kept Blyth off the board
in the second, but worked up in the
third, the visitors jumped all over
their hosts to score five. Cook fed a
backhanded pass to Hesselwood,
who was wide open in front of the
net. Albrechtas set up by Cook and
Hesselwood scored on a break
away, then Krystopher Campbell
picked up his own rebound to score
unassisted.

Bokhout went in on an open net
with 15 seconds on the clock to
tally the final marker.
Great in net was Salverda, whose
shutout was spoiled in the game’s
final minute.
Sunday, Belmore was back in
Blyth and proved their mettle com
ing back from the previous day’s
lopsided victory to take the series.
With the ‘Dogs fans clearly
behind them the Blyth squad
jumped into a first-period lead
when Cook, skating in alone after
receiving a pass from Bokhout,
beat out the goalie.
With Belmore ahead again, Cook
swept in front of the netminder and
stuffed a backhander past him to
close the gap to one. Seconds later,
however, Belmore bulged the twine
on an open net to give them some
insurance.
Elliott was solid in net frustrating
the Belgrave players several times.
The Bulldogs now move to the
consolation side of the group play
downs.
Jim Oster, Jack Watson, Brent
Brooks and Dean Whitfield drove
in singles.
Mike Bromley and Don Allen
scored for the ‘Dogs.
Auburn’s Steve Plunkett and Ben
Craig each managed two, while sin
gles went to Ian Andrews and Jason
Rutledge.

It was a weekend filled with hard
work and a lot of fun for the Brus
sels Tykes when they participated
in the Wallace Fun Days tourna
ment in Kurtsville.
The squad met a tough opponent
Friday evening when they took to
the ice against Minto #l (Harris
ton). In 45 minutes, straight-time
play, Minto slid three by Brussels
goalie Robert Cronin in the first
three minutes.
Cronin soon found his legs,
deflecting two more shots in close,
one on a break which he lifted with
his shoulder.
Brussels was down by several
before Matt Huether was able to
break through.
Great defensive work by Cole
McLean around his own net helped
keep the shots clear of Cronin, then
a backhand flip by Huether brought
Brussels closer.
Minto’s hot goalie stopped shots
from Ray Huether, Rundstedler and
Brendan Stretton. Nice passes by
Andrew Watson helped set up
plays in front of the Minto netmin
der. Good work along the boards
by Randy Zwep kept the puck
moving, giving M. Huether the
chance to pocket one more before
the final buzzer.
Saturday’s first game was against
the Listowel Mustangs.
Ty Sebastian and Gavin Bowers
had excellent chances in the open
ing minutes only to have the puck
gloved by the goalie. Zwep worked
hard to set up the shots.
After Jordan Roberts and Ryan
Baker cleared the puck out of their
end, Stretton took it the full length

over 10 minutes later, Stretton
struck again on a pass from Nic
Gowing.
Sebastian, McLean, Watson, M.
Huether and Zwep battled in front
of the opposing net, trying to slip
one by the goalie only to be
stopped.
The Mustangs evened the score
at 25:01, only to see M. Huether
pull Brussels ahead at 23:03.
He later scored another on a
wrap- around.
Good work behind the net by
Roberts pushed the puck to open
ice, allowing a backhand shot'by
M. Huether and an attempt by
Chris Becker to push in the
rebound.
M. Huether and Stretton rounded
out the scoring.
In the final game of the tourney,
the Tykes met the Listowel Fire
birds. M. Huether and Rundstedler
gave Brussels netminder Sebastian
some breathing room when they
tallied two in the first two minutes.
The Firebirds drew even when
they slid one by Sebastian then lift
ed another over his shoulder.
M. Huether deked the goalie at
35:02 and Stretton added another at
33:51 to open the lead. Listowel
tied it, then M. Huether slid one in
the open side and R. Huether fol

on defense while Sebastian dove to
smother the puck or deflected shots
with his chest.
Stretton scored his second of the

closed it out a 3:31.
Wingham began to pull it together.
