Decision on PUC service coming down to the wire By Janice Becker Citizen staff There are only about four weeks until Blyth council must come to a decision regarding PUC restructur ing. Blyth Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart told council at the Jan. 18 meeting that a decision to amalga mate the PUC with other small util ities in Huron and Perth or sell the Blyth interest must be made by the end of February. It had originally been suggested that there be one utility in Huron and one in Perth county. However, since talks began, Goderich, Strat ford and Exeter have decided to stand alone. This left 12 small utilities, all of which would need to amalgamate to make a joint venture efficient, said Stewart. It was suggested that if any of the remaining 12 were to opt out of the joint venture, those left would not be able to make that option work. COP wants phone The matter of good communica tion for the Blyth Citizens on Patrol group came before council at the Jan. 18 session. COP representative George Ives attended the meeting to discuss the possibility of purchasing phone for the group. Blyth Clerk-Treasurer Stewart informed council Bell Mobility phone would cost $149.95 and a card could be pur chased for $25 which would be for a cell John that a three months. Any unused hours could be forwarded to the next peri od. The cost for local calls between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. would be 1 cent per minute and long distance calls ' would be 36 cents, according to Ives. The phone could be used by municipal staff when not in use by COP. A motion was passed authorizing the purchase of a phone. For a small utility to stand alone, it could cost each household an additional $50 per year on top of usage charges. This fee could be $25 per household even with a joint venture, said Stewart. The other option for PUCs would be to sell with Ontario Hydro the most obvious choice at present. Councillor Jeff Howson said that although he only sees one option, he recommended council meet with the PUC commissioners for their input. Reeve Mason Bailey said the matter had been discussed exten sively at PUC meetings, but they had not been clear on how they felt. Bailey also agreed input should be heard from the commissioners. A meeting of all councils and commissioners involved will be held Jan. 27 in Seaforth to attempt to decide on an option.
