PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2000. A Note from Betty | “Walking in a winter wonderland”. The tune that goes with those words keeps popping into my thoughts as I see the fluffy stuff come down, as I admire the white feathery blanket on the patio and enjoy the exquisite snow sculptures on the shrubs. Yes, it is a winter wonderland. I realize there are several people who don’t like winter - the cold, the snow, the cold, the snow. Oh yes, and the unreliable weather. We almost take sides on this winter issue and either love it or hate it. Two choices - leave the province or enjoy! Spring will soon be here. Good news to see business activity on the main street. A consignment store is in the works. A note in the former Crafters shop gives phone numbers to contact, so give them a helping hand to get their business started. Speaking of stores go into Just For You and buy yourself a flower and while you’re there see if you can get Aggie to tell you about her “sisters” who live here in town. In fact if you can guess who her sisters are she’ll probably give you an extra piece of fem. The folk of Scottish descent were flinging their kilts on the weekend and continued celebrating on the proper Robbie Bums day just past. Did you dig out your plaid underwear in celebration? I’m sure John Robson did. As you can tell I’ve been nursing extra this week and the news of Brussels in my life has been scarce. So if you have tidbits to share, leave me a message. In the meantime, get a friend to make snow angels with you. Bye now, Betty G. Anyone with stories or news about the Brussels community contact Betty at 887-9231. WMS answers Melville Women’s Guild held its first meeting of the new millennium in the church parlour on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. commencing with a delicious potluck supper. Rev. Cathrine Campbell and Alice Marks were in charge of the evening. Mrs. Marks opened the meeting with a poem followed by the scripture reading from Genesis l (the beginning of creation). She read a list of New Year’s resolutions people should try to follow. Rev. Campbell gave food for thought and asked some trivia questions. Mrs. Marks presided for the business part of the meeting. The minutes of the December meeting were read by Secretary Leona Armstrong. Jeanne Ireland gave the treasurer’s report. The catering group list was discussed and brought up to date. Cathy Cardiff and Kim Yuswa will be catering group leaders for another year. Leaders of each meeting will be responsible for the flowers each week in the church sanctuary and looking after setting out the lunch on the last Sunday of that particular month. Mary Huether and Mrs. Ireland offered to be in charge of the February meeting. Brussels Students on the job By Devon Josling Since the holidays Brussels students from kindergarten to Grade 8 have been working hard on their work. Everyone here is ready to learn. I think that we are going to have a fun time in the year of 2000. When kindergarten A got back from the Christmas holidays they had a game week. That’s when everyone in the class brought in a game to share with the class. Grade 1 is also having some fun because students are starting to work with money in math. They also started to write poems about winter. Grade 2s are busy making books. They are learning how to write and publish their own work. The Grade 3 class started pioneer projects. They are being presented in class. They have built cabins and a diorama of a kitchen. By Justin Wellman The Grade 4 class has been studying rocks and minerals for science. The Grade 5/6 class won an ice cream party for the Christmas room decorating contest, sponsored by student council. Despite the cold weather they still enjoyed their treats. The scientists in Grade 5/6 are brewing up lots of experiments using liquids, solids and gases. Grade 6/7 started tropical fish projects in French. The Grade 7/8 class is putting on a French carnival Feb. 11. They are organizing the play day for part of their French mark. News from the Branch By JoAnn McDonald Only one more week and January will be over. Winter’s over half gone and haven’t we been lucky. Friday night suppers continue with a nice crowd enjoying the variety of foods - chicken on this week’s menu, I believe. The Saturday euchre had 10 tables at play. The lucky pair of Leona and JoAnn McDonald were the winners and close behind was Irene Sellers and Marie Stewart. Third place went to Glen Sellers and Jim Coultes. The lucky lone hand winners were Norma Dobson and Lillian Appleby. The Robbie Burns dance saw a good crowd enjoying the music of Beechwood. The singles dance had a good crowd as well. Ruth Lowe is still recovering at home and is doing well. You still have a chance to get in and sign the millennium and memorial table. The Branch will be quiet this week as a few members are away on holidays. Don’t forget to read the coming events ads to know what’s on At The Branch. trivia Brussels Mennonite Fellowship (519) 887-6388 Worship Service 9:30 a.m. Jesus is Lord Guests Welcome AEROBIC WORKOUT LOCATION: 72 Mill St. (across from the library) Start Times 7:00 a.m 12:15 p.m. 8:15 p.m. 10:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 8:15 p.m. 7:00 a.m 10:30 a.m. NOTICE TO BRUSSELS RESIDENTS The Brussels Municipal/ PUC Office will be closed every Thursday through out the entire year.
