(Ashiey Gropp photo) Tykes avenge earlier loss Bulldogs down Lucknow The Brussels Tykes took to the ice at home Saturday ready to avenge their early season loss to the Blyth Whites. The end-to-end action started as soon as the puck dropped with Nic Gowing and Cole McLean having good shots on net. A great stop by Blyth’s goalie Greg Dodds thwarted Matt Huether’s first shot, but Huether hit the target the next time, scoring at 12:08. Following a stopped shot off the stick of Brendan Stretton, Huether picked up the puck and deked Dodds for his second. Ray Huether worked his way through the defenders and slid one over the line with 20 seconds left in the first to pct Brussels up 3-0. At 13:02 of the second, M. Huether lifted one over the goalie’s shoulder. Less than a minute later, Sebastian picked up a rebound and put it past a sprawling Dodds. Following a great stop by Brus­ sels netminder Robert Cronin on a break, M. Huether took the puck Novices post 1 loss, 1 win the full length of the ice, setting up a rebound which Herbie Rundst- edler put in at the 40 second mark. Brussels continued strong in the third with M. Huether adding the seventh netter just before the final buzzer. Cronin earned the shutout. Nice passing plays from Sebas­ tian and Ryan Baker helped set up shots for their teammates including one in close by Randy Zwep, but he was stopped. Good rushes by Gavin Bowers helped keep the play in the Blyth end. Work along the blueline and boards by Jordan Roberts, Chris Becker, Andrew Watson and Con­ ner Smith added to the strong offense. Brussels netminder Cronin han­ dled the increased activity in the third period well, stopping many shots in close. Dodds was kept very busy in net, making 25 saves. In spite of the uneven score, both teams worked hard in a very enter­ taining game. The Blyth Atom Bulldogs met Lucknow in exhibition play, Jan. 13, and came out on the winning end of a 5-3 tally. Blake Hesselwood got things started on a breakaway. He was sent in on a pass from Darcey Cook at 7:39 of the first. Josh Albrechtas squeaked one by the Lucknow netminder at 5:07 on a pass from Devon Jenkins. Lucknow drew to within one before the buzzer. Richard Gregg put the home side back up by two on a set-up by Krystopher Campbell at 8:40 of the second. John Bokhout added anoth­ er Bulldog tally after receiving a pass from Cook. Cook closed out the scoring for Blyth at 3:43 of the second on a great individual effort. Lucknow tried to get back in the contest in the third, putting the puck in the net twice. Blyth goalies Jeff Elliott and Neil Salverda were tested often, but managed to preserve the victory by keeping Lucknow scoring to a min­ imum. On Friday, Blyth took to the ice in Brussels for the final meeting of the two squads this year. Sparked by Albrechtas’ three points, Blyth battled Brussels to a 3-3 tie. Matt White put Brussels up 1-0, scoring on a powerplay with 29 C itizen seconds to go in the first. Cory Chapman and Adam McClure picked up assists. Cook tied the score for Blyth, grabbing the rebound off an Albrechtas shot. Hesselwood earned an assist. Taking a backhand feed from Albrechtas, Cook slapped the go- ahead goal past Brussels’ Kyle Gibson at 7:26 of the second. White drew the home team ever Brussels edges Hensail After a see-saw battle with Blyth •Jan. 14 (see Blyth story), the Brus­ sels Atoms travelled to Hensail Sat­ urday. While the teams were well- matched, the play got rougher and the fans louder as it progressed. The referees finally began calling penalties. Brussels earned the only goal of Novices lose close one In exhibition play at home, Jan. 7, the Blyth Novices were edged 2- 1. Scoring was Roman Sturzeneg­ ger with an assist from Curtis at 8:36 of the third on a nice pass from McClure. Albrechtas put Blyth up 3-2 when his solo effort bulged the twine at 3:13 of the third. White earned a hattrick when he went in alone on Blyth goalie Salverda with 2:05 remaining. Elliott made some tremendous saves for the Bulldogs in the first half of the game. the game when Adam McClure and Andrew McDonald each took a shot then Greg Bowers scored when he found the puck on his stick with an open net in front of him. The Atoms play their final game of the regular season against Mil­ verton, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. The first round of piaydowns will be against Howick. Robertson. Anthony Peters did a great job keeping his team in the game. 2000 PHONE BOOK Serving Auburn Blyth Brussels Clinton Goderich Gorrie Wingham The Brussels Novice squad took a loss and a win in play last week when they went up against Elma- Logan and Drayton. It was a low-scoring contest, Jan. 1 1 when Brussels travelled to Elma-Logan. In spite of getting on the board first on a solo effort from Tom Cronin at 5:26 of the first period, Brussels lost hold of the lead in the second. Elma-Logan came out hard in the middle frame, popping in three goals in under three minutes. Brussels was unable to recover, scoring just one more on a play set up by Brian Burgess and netted by Cody Subject. Brussels was on the winning end of a 6-2 score Jan. 15 when Dray­ ton came to town. While dealing with numerous penalties, Brussels managed a 3-0 lead through two and upped it to five before Drayton broke the shutout. Second-period scorers were Wade Stephenson with two and Subject. Thomas Johnston (two), Joel Wilkinson and Burgess got the assists. Cronin teamed up with Tyler Deitner for a netter at 14:38 of the third then the pair set up Subject for his second just over a minute later.
