(Vicky Bremnerphoto) ST 1 Letters to the editor COP group seeks input THE EDITOR, Out of the North Huron Community Policing Committee meetings it was discussed that many of the small communities have organized a Citizens on Patrol for their communities. It has been found to reduce crime and vandalism in these communities. Citizens on Patrol volunteer their time and vehicle to patrol their community’s streets. Usually between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. volunteers travel in twos and only observe, never leaving their vehicle. Any unusual activity is reported to the police by cell phone. All volunteers must fill out a form for a police check. Volunteers can choose to go out on patrol whatever night and hours they choose. This is one volunteer commitment where the volunteer dictates his or her own hours. In Blyth we have a small but dedicated group of volunteers who have been patrolling our streets off and on since February, 1999. The volunteers have suggested that input from the Blyth businesses and/or residents would be appreciated either through businesspeople and/or residents volunteering to patrol and/or letting the Citizens on Patrol know the areas of concern their individual businesses or residents might have. The more positive feedback the volunteers have the more likely the Citizens on Patrol will continue. Please contact the Blyth Municipal Office for more information if you are interested. Brenda J. Burkholder On behalf of The Citizens on Patrol Committee. Writer shares historical info THE EDITOR, I was sent a copy of the North Huron Citizen “Looking Back at a Century”, Dec. 29.
