Tykes lose at home A strong effort by the Chiefs pushed them ahead of the Bulldogs in Blyth Industrial League hockey play this past week. Goalscorers for the Chiefs in the 7-4 win were Dennis Vere (two), Brent McCaw (two), Jeff Taylor, Jeff MacGregor and Ben Lobb. Bulldogs scorers were Mike Brom­ ley (three) and Shawn Bromley. Holiday fun The Sting surpassed the Stars in their 8-3 victory. Hitting the net for the Sting were Brent Brooks (three), Doug Craig, Darryl Chalmers, Kurt Whitfield, Scott Stevenson and Steve Siertse- ma. Michael Haggitt tallied two and Rick Elliott one for the Stars. The team standings are: Sting, six wins, two losses, 12 points, 63 goals for and 23 goals against; Stars, 6-2, 12 points, 47 and 36; Auburn, 4-4, 8 points, 32 and 30; Bulldogs, 3-5, 6 points, 23 and 47 and the Chiefs, 1-7, 2 points, 27 and 55. A complete list of players’ stats will be posted at the arena. In the rematch of an early season game, the Brussels Tykes challenged Hensall on home ice, Jan. 8. Goalie Nic Gowing was put to the test early and often as he stopped many shots in close on breakaways. Brussels scored at the 12:10 mark of the first when Matt Huether got the puck at the top of the circle and flipped the shot home. One minute later, Ray Huether set up Brendan Stretton who took the puck at the opponent’s blue line and went in alone. Hensall scored when a player stole the puck from a defender and slid it over the line. Cole McLean had a good shot on net but narrowly missed. Hensall captured the lead in the second and never gave it up. Down 4-2 near the end of the sec­ ond, Herbie Rundstedler was credit­ ed with drawing Brussels to within Bulldogs defeated The Blyth Atom Bulldogs fell behind early and were never able to recover in their Jan. 6 contest against Teeswater. The visitors hit the board first, scoring two in the second before Blyth’s Darcey Cook, with the assis­ tance of John Bokhout and Josh Albrechtas, pulled them to within one.Teeswater responded with two more before the buzzer. Cook and Bokhout combined for Blyth’s second at 10:08 of the third, but that would be as close as they would get. Teeswater tapped in two more for the 6-2 win. The following day, Blyth travelled to Milverton. Tykes play first game of new year The Blyth Purple Tyke Bulldogs faced their first opponents of the new year on home ice, Thursday Jan. 6. The scoring began early in the first with a goal from Colin Bokhout, assisted by Tyler Middegaal and Kirby Cook, only to be answered by Mitchell 10 seconds later. Mitchell hammered in another two goals to jump ahead. Sheldon Reid, assisted by linemates Adam Cronin and Tyler Black, popped Blyth’s second goal past the Mitchell netminder to end the first period scoring. Mitchell scored late in the second period and although several rushes were made, Blyth couldn’t even the score. The tally was kept to a minimum with great defensive play by Lukas Witherspoon, Aaron Popp, Matt Chalmers and Mathew Popp. Hot in net once again was Grant Sparling, as he disgruntled one. However, that was to be the last for Brussels as Hensall hit for three in the third and a 7-3 victory. Gavin Bowers narrowly missed adding to the home tally with a nice wrap around attempt late in the final frame. Good work along the boards by Ryan Baker, Robert Cronin, Morgan Deitner and Randy Zwep and defen­ sive plays in front of the net by M. Huether and Chris Becker helped keep the puck out. Great clearing shots from Jordan Roberts and Stretton assisted Gowing. Roberts and Ty Sebastian also worked well along the blueline to keep the puck in Hensall's end. Conner Smith did some checking in his end to slow the play. The entire team worked hard in a tough battle as they stayed in it to the end. The home team were up 3-0 when Cook and Bokhout got the puck to Blake Hesselwood for the tally. Milverton regained their three- goal lead before the end of the frame. Blyth got back into it in the sec­ ond, off goals from Hesselwood and Brittany Peters. Cook and Bokhout each earned another assist. Milverton and Blyth exchanged goals in the third before the home- towners put in two unanswered net- ters to seal the 7-4 win. Kody Reid scored Blyth’s fourth while Justin Dobie and Orie Falconer earned assists. The tandem of Jeff Elliott and Joel Salverda did a great job in net for the Bulldogs. numerous Mitchell attempts to increase their score. The coaching staff noted the effort given by all members of the Purple squad, every shift, as they persistently battled the brawny Mitchell squad. The next home game is this Thursday evening at 6 p.m. as Blyth hosts the Seaforth Tykes. Hawks lose Some solid goaltending put the Wingham PeeWee Hawks on the losing side of a 6-1 match-up against Walkerton away on Sun­ day, Jan. 9. The lone visiting marker was scored by Michelle Cook, off a play from Rachel Elliott. Despite the lopsided result, goalie Allison Quennell worked well, making sev­ eral brilliant saves in the Hawk’s net.
