Family shares hobby with Greenway visitors
The chickens are also grateful for
fresh corn to peck.
Siertsema has been active with the
Greenway project. It provides local
residents and visitors from other
areas with a chance to be active and
outdoors. The scenery is lovely and
the animals are friendly.

Deer family
Murray Siertsema of Blyth checks on his English fallow deer. He keeps the deer, ponies,
chickens, budgies and finches in pens adjacent to the Blyth Greenway Trail so walkers can
pet, feed and enjoy the animals. Presently the animals are especially happy to have guests

Citizen staff
Murray and Doreen Siertsema of
Blyth welcome visitors to enjoy their
animals while walking the
Greenway trail.
“I love the animals,” says Murray.
“We keep some laying hens and
meat birds, pigeons, doves, budgies,
finches, ponies, deer, goats and
Belgian work horses.”
After retiring from dairy farming
13 years ago the Siertsemas
purchased his parents’ farm at the
west edge of Blyth. Prior to the elder
Siertsemas’ ownership the farm
belonged to Gordon Flax Ltd.
Murray and Doreen weren’t long
on the new place before they began
to acquire livestock. The deer came
in ones and twos and have been a
learning experience. “There’s no
money in them but people like to see
them so we keep a few.”
Murray likes to do the field work
with the horses but doesn’t always
have the time or equipment so the
tractor gets used. There are 36 acres
workable and he has used his own
horse-drawn plow and seed drill
some years.
The Belgian team comes home
during the Thresher Reunion from
the Mennonite farm where they
work. Siertsemas also use the horse
team for community events like hay
and sleigh rides. The horses are also
good for hauling firewood.
The young pair of Belgians who
live at the Blyth farm are halter
broke but not yet trained to work.
They are often curious when people
come to see them.
The ponies are great pets and
whinny to visitors who will husk and
feed corn to them. There are two
pinto mares and a foal from this year.
Young entrepreneur
Luke Siertsema of Blyth displays his sweet corn for sale off
County Rd. 25. “The corn is really good this year and sales
are going well,” he said. He takes the four-wheeler down to
his grandfather Murray’s place three or four times per day to
pick fresh corn. Any leftovers go back for visitors to feed to
the ponies and deer. (Sandra Johnstone photo)
