(Vicky Bremner photo) Squirts out hit Seaforth Brussels U-lls win, lose The Brussels Squirt softball team was on the winning and losing side after playing two games last week. Zurich travelled to Brussels on June 9 and faced pitchers Melinda Dorsch and Brianne Wheeler. Zurich scored seven runs in the first inning with Brussels scoring three. But Brussels responded in the second inning, scoring seven more runs themselves with Zurich adding only one. However, Brussels scored their last run in the third inning pushing T. Sjaarda nets hattrick The rain that fell on Thursday, June 12, did not put a damper on the Blyth Lightning’s energy, when they played against the Goderich Legal Eagles, at the Blyth Sparling Field. Tyson Sjaarda scored very early in the game, with assists to Jory Uyl and Brandi Bearss. Ten minutes into the game Sjaarda scored again with the help of Blaine Hallahan and Uyl. Five minutes later Tony Bean scored the third goal for the Lightning, with Uyl assisting. Sjaarda kicked the ball into the opposing net for the fourth goal, with Bean and Uyl assisting. Like lightning, three minutes later, Uyl scored with Sjaarda assisting, making the final score 5-0. All five goals were acquired in the first half of play. Goderich had a hard time getting their total to 11. Final score of the game was 16-11 for Zurich. Given only a day’s rest, the Squirts took to the diamond again on Wednesday in Seaforth with Andrew Lindsay and Brianne Wheeler on the mound. Brussels scored only one run in the first inning to match the seven Seaforth scored. Brussels responded overwhelmingly scoring five runs in the fifth inning and seven runs in the sixth. Christine Bone was superb in net for the team, June 3, when they travelled to Newry to take on Elma 1. She stopped repeated shots, keeping her team in the game and giving them time to gain the advantage. Kabrina Bishop worked hard in the offensive end for Brussels, as she kept the pressure on. Gavin Bowers netted Brussels’ first goal. A nice clearing shot by Chris Becker to Cam Schlosser, both on defence got the ball out to Avaleigh Nonkes. Bowers took the ball down for a shot by Natalie White before the rush was stopped. White’s next effort proved successful, putting the visitors up by two. Bowers topped off the scoring in Midgets top Hibbert 4-2 The Brussels Midget girls played two games this past week splitting with a win and a loss. Brussels was host to St. Pauls on Monday, June 9. Lesley Pepper started on the mound with seven strikeouts. Catrina Josling came in to relieve in the fourth to finish out the game. St. Pauls led the scoring in the first, getting two runs on walks. Brussels answered back with Pepper hitting a triple followed by singles by Lacey McCall, Sarah McDonald and Josling. These would be the only runs to cross the plate for Brussels. St. Pauls added another run in the third, four in the fourth and another two in the fifth. The final score was St. Pauls, 9, Brussels, 4. Brussels then travelled to Hibbert on Wednesday, June 11. Pepper was outstanding on the mound with 15 strikeouts in five innings of play. Name Change: That portion of Diagonal Road between Victoria Street and John Street in the ward of Wingham changed to Veterans Road. Road Naming: The private road between Victoria Street and John Street immediately to the west of F.E. Madill Secondary School in the ward of Wingham named Madill Drive. The municipal road between Blyth Road (County Road 25) and the Blyth Campgrounds in the Ward of Blyth named Threshers Lane. North Huron Council shall consider a by-law to adopt these proposed changes at the July 7th Council Meeting. Written comments and/or oral presentations may be made to the Council in respect to the foregoing prior to the passage of the by-law. Curtis White and Melissa Dale aided Bone by deflecting shots before they reached the crease. Elma notched a second goal late in the game, but Brussels held the 3-2 lead. Breanne den Dekker was always in the middle of the play and Kristen Grobbink and Morgan Deitner showed strong play in the back field. In spite of a strong effort in the second half, Brussels came up just short when they played Elma 2, June 10. Down 3-0 early in the game, a penalty shot on the mark by Zwep got the home team on the board. Though much of the play was in the Elma end, Brussels had some Hibbert only scored one run in the third on an error and one in the fifth on a bases loaded walk. Pepper shut down the Hibbert team leaving 11 runners stranded on base. Brussels had remained scoreless until the third leaving three runners in scoring position. In the top of the Brussels U-9s lose heartbreaker The Brussels U-9 soccer squad lost a'heartbreaker when they played Listowel recently. Cameron Stewart and Anthony Lichty performed well in goal, during the action filled game. Despite their best efforts and those of their teammates, Listowel managed to slip one into the end, finishing the game with a 1-0 score. trouble connecting for serious attempts. Playing the field for this contest, Bone took the ball from centre, deked the goal and slid it in just inside the post to take the score to 3- 2. With help from Zwep and Vicky Blake, Bowers tied the game minutes later. With the clock ticking down, Elma got hold of the ball and kicked it high over netminder Schlosser’s head for the go-ahead goal. Adrian Menzi had a nice rush late in the game and Jason Warwick worked the centre line to stop Elma from advancing. Matthew Cardiff’s defence kept Elma’s shots to a minimum. The Brussels attackers kept the pressure on until the final whistle, but were unable to re-establish the tie. They took the 4-3 loss.
