Donald Woodley, chair of the Festival’s board of governors, announced May 13 that Monette has accepted a three-year extension of his current contract, which was set to end in 2004. “Richard Monette, who started as artistic director in 1994, has trans formed the Stratford Festival for both artists and audiences over the past 10 seasons,” said Woodley. “The list of accomplishments by the Festival under Richard’s leadership demonstrates both his visionary nature and his profound care for the future of the Stratford Festival.” The creation of the Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, the introduction of the Studio Theatre, the expression of new play develop ment activities and the establishment of the For All Time Endowment Campaign represent some of the defining moments of Monette’s tenure, said Woodley. “During this period, the Festival also reached out to a wider audience through transfers to New York, Chicago, Ottawa and Edmonton, through film, television and radio projects, through expanded educa tional outreach and by drawing record audiences in Stratford.” As well, Woodley said, Monette will be the first Stratford Festival Artistic Director to present the entire Shakespeare canon during his tenure. “With Richard and executive director Antoni Cimolino at the helm, the board of governors is con- ^k JkJkJk JlkJk JkJk Jk J J J Nifty at 50 and still a youngster at heart Happy half a century Motorplex locks in Nationals IHRA President Bill Bader and Grand Bend Motorplex co-owner Paul Spriet announced a six-year contract insuring the future of the track’s Hooters IHRA drag racing Series event the Mopar Canadian Nationals through 2009. “This is a very big announcement for Grand Bend Motorplex,” Spriet said. This year’s race marked the fourth year of the original contract for the Mopar Canadian Nationals, the first IHRA national event in Canada. As a result of IHRA’s presence in Grand Bend, the 2003 Hooters IHRA drag racing series consists of three Canadian national events, including races in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta. “We are proud to be racing at Grand Bend Motorplex,” said IHRA president Bill Bader. “This is the track where IHRA began its journey into Canada and we have done noth ing but increase our exposure in the country. Our success here is a direct result of the dedicated fans and sponsors involved in this race.” Headquartered in Norwalk, Ohio, IHRA is the fastest growing drag racing sanctioning body in North America.
