Thousands of students turn off televisions Turn off the Screens Week 2003 was a great success with 1,000 school-aged students participating in the challenge from April 7 - April 11. The Turn Off the Screens Week challenge was an initiative to increase physical activity in children, youth and their families. The Huron County Health Unit and Take Heart Huron encouraged families to turn off their televisions, video games and computers, except for use with homework. Along with several neighbouring counties, Huron successfully took this opportunity to renew family commitment to spending time together getting active, playing games, and enjoying the great outdoors. There were several prizes awarded as a result of the Challenge. The grand prize, a $250 gift certificate for sporting goods, was awarded to Kelsey Smith a Grade 3 student from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Clinton. There were four, second- place prizes consisting of $50 gift certificates for sporting goods. The runner-up prizes were awarded to Paige Wilson from Clinton Public School, Abbey Wise, a Grade 2 student from Clinton Public School, Foster Postill a Grade 2 student from Huron Centennial Public School and Mikayla A’len a Grade 3 student from Hullett Central Public School. There were also 20 participants who were awarded with Take Heart Huron Frisbees. Two packages of physical education equipment have been awarded to the two schools with the highest rate of participation in this year’s challenge. Congratulations to Lucknow District Christian School and Clinton District Christian School for having the highest rate of participation based on school size. Congratulations to all of the families who were successful in completing the challenge. Why is turning off the screens so important? As a result of the contest, families who completed the challenge stated that they had more time to share with each other, and parents stated that their children had longer attention spans and were able to entertain themselves for longer periods of time. “By turning off the TV, families can spend more time doing activities that are good for their health, such as spending time with each other, reading, and being physically active,” said Erica Arnett of the Huron County Health Unit. For those individuals who are already active, do a little more, more often. It’s never too late to experience the benefits of regular physical activity. When you turn off the screen, you will find extra hours in your day that can be spent on a wide range of activities. Try hiking on one of Huron County’s many trails; start up a game of ultimate Frisbee; take in the springtime’s fresh air on an evening bike ride. Any activity that gets you and your family turning of! the screens and getting more involved will help nurture healthy hearts and minds.
