Lodges attend Melville
Melville Presbyterian Church
welcomed members of the Rebekah
and the Oddfellows IOOF Lodges to
the Sunday morning service. It was
the church’s turn to have their parade
and the presentation of their flags at
the front of the sanctuary.
Mary Douma was organist for the
service.
The junior choir presented three
anthems: Be Our Guest; Love Love
Love; and Pass it Along. The
children joined the others at the front
of the church for their part of the
service.
Rev. Cathrine Campbell discussed
with them the meaning of the flag
which has been placed at the front by
the Lodges. The dove on the
Rebekah flag stands for peace and
the beehive means industry in a
community, while the three link
chain signifies the affiliation with
the Oddfellows. She told the
children of the first Rebecca who
Elaine Armstrong with their family.
There’s a call going out for men’s
neckties to be brought to church on
Father’s Day Sunday June 15. The
150th Anniversary Committee wants
to make a necktie banner from them
for celebration in 2004.

was the mother of Jacob and Esau,
and how she had to work for peace
and for the support of her tribal
community those many years ago.
The children gained an awareness
of how the Rebekahs and
Oddfellows contribute to this
community by serving those in need
and that they provide mobility aids
in our community.
Reader Mae Ebel, representing the
Rebekahs, assisted with the scripture
readings of Acts 1: 12-26; 1 John 5:
5 - 15; John 17: 6 - 19.
Rev. Campbell’s sermon, Standing
Still? was focused on the disciples as
they gathered together after Christ’s
ascension into heaven. It was time
for them to get active and spread the
message of Christ’s life. Realizing
that now there were only 11 of them,
they decided to choose someone to
replace Judas Iscariot.
It must be one who had been a
follower of Christ since the very
beginning of his teaching and a
witness right to the resurrection.
Two names were put forth and the
disciples cast lots to finally chose
Matthias as the 13th disciple.
The idea was that in the casting of
lots, God could direct the outcome
by influencing where the lots fell.
Those original disciples were sent by
God. Today Christians are called by
Jesus to be His disciples and follow
His teachings, Rev. Campbell said.
The offering was collected by Bill
Aitchison, Leanne Armstrong, Bill
King and Frank Schimanski.
Greeters at the door were Brian and
