The Blyth Lightning Mosquito
squad got zapped on Thursday, May
22, when they played against the
Lucknow Optimists in Lucknow.
The Optimist squad outscored the
Lightning, but did not outplay them.
The Lightning had several
opportunities to get on the

more chances to score and could not
be held down.
The Lightning punched the ball

two goals before Brantford tallied
four. Jordan Doig got his first goal of
his lacrosse career and Cory
Chapman assisted by Xavier
O’Krafka scored the second marker.
The second period started with

l -9s lose to Newton
After missing a cancelled game
against Elma II due to a heavy
downpour the week before, the
Brussels U9s started their soccer
season with a game against Newton
on Victoria Day.
During the first half the game, the
Brussels team, consisting of 25
players, happily took on the
challenge of becoming familiar with
the game and their positions.
Although much of the play was in the
Brussels end, the players did their
best defensively to stop the scoring
opportunities by the determined
Newton team.
In net, Cameron Stewart showed
his skills by making many fabulous
saves leaving the Brussels squad
down by only three.
In the second half, the Brussels
team picked up the pace to challenge

the visitors. The team worked hard to
manoeuvre the ball into the other end.
Intent on getting a goal, it was
Stewart who scored to boost the spirit
of the team.
The team continued to hold its
own, with goaltender Anthony Lichty
making several brilliant saves
demonstrating his keen soccer
abilities. In the end, it was a 4-1 loss.
It was a big upset when Elma I
blew into town May 26.
Stewart worked hard in net
thwarting many attempts by the
visiting offence during the first
quarter of the game. Despite his best
effort, however, the Elma team had
managed three by the end of the first
half.
Defence continued to fight to clear
the ball from the Brussels end, but the
strong Elma team got past goalie Joel
Nonkes, who had relieved Stewart for
the second half, for a final score of 8-
0 for Elma.
