Brussels U-lls tie, lose
An “awesome” game by the

After shutting out their opponents

This made the game a little more fair
for the younger players. It gave them
a chance when they were out to get
at the ball.
Hitting the net for Team III were
Lexandrea Smith with two, Wyatt
Machan and Matthew Terpstra.
Machan played well in the first
half with several solid plays while
Smith picked up the pace in the
highly offensive second.
Team Il’s Owen Hamilton was in
net again. He did a fantastic job
trying to keep the ball out of the net.
There were awesome plays from
Dalton Hamilton and Dalen Martin,

ball down the field and into the other

The younger players for Team II,

but
The Brussels U-ll soccer team
took a tie and a loss in two games
last week.
Tuesday brought Newton III to
town for a seesaw game of scoring.
Newton struck first, but Natalie
White put one between the posts for
Brussels to tie the score.
A shot by Gavin Bowers regained
the tie for Brussels after Newton had
gone ahead.
The squad settled for a 2-2 tie.
On a cool Thursday, Brussels
travelled to Mornington Public
School where they played a make-up
game against Newton II after a
rainout the prior week.
Playing on the small field brought
challenges for both teams as the
goalies had to stop kicks from centre
and the field was a little crowded.
Adrian Menzi started in net
Brussels.
Christine Bone attacked
opponent’s net, working hard
having her shot stopped.
Brussels was on the board first
thanks to a strong effort from White
who took it in from halfway on her
own.
Melissa Dale made a nice play on
defence, taking down the opponent
after pushing the player to the
outside.
Brittany Thyssen showed good
work upfield.
Newton tied the game when they
took the ball from a throw-in.
In spite of the hometeam
controlling much of the play in the
first half, Brussels held even with
the help of Vicky Blake and Bone on
defence as well as Kristen
Grobbink’s hustle for the ball.
Emily Prior started off the second
half with a nice chance on net, but
shot it just wide.
A hook shot from Randy Zwep on
the left wing curved just inside the
post to put Brussels up 2-1.
Blake took over in net and was
quickly faced with a shot from
centre that came straight at her.

Lucknow
The Blyth Mosquito Thunder U-13
squad dominated play during the
second half of their May 29 match
against the Lucknow Stars, securing
the lead they had built early in the
game.
With Derek Youngblut and Jesse
Hill sharing time between the posts,
the goal tending duo kept the visitors
to just two goals while Blyth players
knocked in four.
Scoring for the home team were
Gordon Brigham with two, Ben
Caldwell and Regal Good.
Coach Alan Young said the group
is starting to come together as a
team.

Newton picked up the rebound and
put it in for the tie.
Though the latter part of game was
played more in the Newton end than
Brussels’, the home team made the
most of their chances, tallying three
more before Brussels could answer.
On the fifth netter, Blake was pulled
out of position trying to block the
shot and Chris Becker backed her
up, booting the ball out before the
rebound was knocked over the line.
