At the Branch Comrades extend get well wishes By Jo-Ann McDonald Brussels Legion Comrade Al Nichol is out of hospital but Frank Cardiff is still in Wingham. Comrades John Harrison and Jim Brown participated in the horseshoe competition in Wingham and came in fourth out of nine teams. The Friday night supper of ham and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed by all. This week is chicken wings and salads. Saturday was the Cadet Corps annual inspection. Guests and family members were on hand to view the marching drill, rifle drill and the various stations including survival gear, map and compass artillery, cadet insignia and first aid stations. The corps was inspected by Captain Patrick King C.D. Chief of Police (retired). Nine Cadets are attending summer camp at Blackdown, located at CFP Borden. Warrant Officer David Robin is going on the U.S. Survival Exchange program held in California. He has achieved the level of Gold Star Cadet. Congratulations to him. Other awards presented to the Cadets included: Espirit de Corps Award, to CpI. Dan Forbes; Best Cadet Jr. award, Prv. Jolene Vanderholk; Best Cadet Sr. award, Cpl. Aaron Berlet; dress and deportment award, Prv. Lance Stafford; the Junior NCO award, Master Cpl. Larry Cyples; Most Improved Cadet, Cpl. Sarah Moser; Glanville Warrant Officer Award, Warrant Officer David Robin. All the Cadets received their certificates for completing their annual star level. A barbecue lunch by the Parent Support Group followed the closing. Congratulations to the Corps and their leaders on a successful year and inspection. June 6 is the anniversary of the Canadian soldiers landing on Juno Beach. It was 59 years ago that 14,000 Canadian soldiers and more allied soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy on the coast of France. By land, air and sea the troops began foicing the Germans back through France for the next 74 days. The historians believe that it was the successful capture of the beaches of Normandy that encouraged the A NOTE FROM BETTY I w AiPWS By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Things are just a little too damp for my liking, but as usual my opinion on the weather and other world affairs is not an issue and so all I can do is mutter a little. The rain caused a lot of disappointment on Saturday as the yard sales were reduced in numbers because of the damp and the wanderers who were out scouting the treasures had to deal with the drearies and increasing cold. The car show was cancelled for the day but it will be rescheduled. Reports of good times were heard from both buyers and sellers and so the day was not a loss for every­ one. Be sure to get out for a nice leisurely walk and admire all the blooms and colour in our village. The many flowering trees along Tumberry Street are worth admiring and the personal gardens have a fine offering of variety and splendour. Don’t miss it. Kids Korner is in need of adult volunteers to help with the planning and execution of this year’s Vacation Bible School, August 11-15. If you can help, phone Yvonne Dettweiler or Julie Mitchell. I have the binoculars packed and the bird book in pocket. We’re away in Point Pelee and Pelee National Park to check on the bird population and the rest of the goodies of that area for a little change. Bye now, Betty G.W. Allies to fight on. (Sarah Mann photo) Lodge drapes charter in memory of officers Morning Star Rebekah Lodge 315 Brussels met on Tuesday, May 27 for the regular meeting with Vice Grand Sister Elva Brown presiding. The charter was draped in loving memory of two Assembly officers. Recent visits were made to Sisters Leona Connelly, Lorraine Edwards, Marie McTaggart and Retta Hoover. Sisters Gertie Kellington and Elva Brown attended the inaugural meeting in St. Marys on Friday, May 16. Sister Isa Rabbets will be District Deputy President for the term 2003- 2004. The church service for Rebekah and Oddfellows will be held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 1. Installation of new officers of Morning Star will be Tuesday, Sept. 9. Sister June Clarke, Warden Rebekah Assembly of Ontario will make her official visit on Tuesday, Oct. 14 with Brussels hosting Listowel and Clinton lodges. Those celebrating birthdays were Sister Edna Pearson and Rene Richmond.
