Don’t drink anything that has an unusual • taste or appearance (eg. salty taste, excessive foam, or unex plained residue.) 5. Appoint a buddy a periodically check up on each other. 6. Be alert if one of your friends appears very intoxicated. If someone passes out, never leave them to sleep it off as they could be suffering from alcohol poisoning. Call 911 and turn them onto their side, with their head on its side as well, to prevent chok ing if they vomit. No one wants their formal night ruined and if these rules are fol lowed, prom night should be safe and fun. It’s the time of year that students are anxious for and parents worry about - prom. For parents who have never had a teen go to the prom and for parents who have been through it before, it’s probably the party after the prom that has them worried. Here are some tips from www.safegrad.com for parents to remember before their teen leaves for the night. 1. Know where your teen will be and get the address, telephone num ber, and name of person holding the party, or where the party is being held. 2. If your teen isn’t staying the night, make sure s/he has a ride home with a designated driver. 3. Be a back-up ride for your teen and let them know it’s okay to call home for a ride under any circum stances, even if they’ve been drink ing. Parents aren’t the only ones who should be thinking ahead about for mal night. Prom-goers need to know that responsibility falls on them for their choices and actions. Here are some tips for teens on how to “party smart” from www.mil likin.edu and from www.lcbo.com/prom. 1. When you go to a party, don’t take beverages, including alcohol, from someone you don’t know well or trust. 2. If someone offers you a drink, accompany that person to the bar and watch your drink being poured and carry it back yourself. 3. Never share or exchange drinks and never leave your drink unattend ed.
