THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2003. ij//I Auburn couple creates garden oasis with pond By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor Mowing the lawn should not be a life-threatening experience. Concerned by the difficulties in maneouvering a mower at the precarious edge of a retaining wall, Jim and Mary Dickson began to consider ways to solve the problem. What they decided for their Auburn- area farm property was that a small pond would eliminate the need for mowing this area. However, as is often the case, what began as a modest idea evolved into an elaborate design which has already paid them back in pleasure and pride. Having decided to begin the project last June, the couple visited a business situated in Carlow. It was after seeing the impressive display of water gardens and ponds there, that the Dicksons’ plans became more grandiose. “Jim said if we were going to do this it wasn’t going to be a half job,” says Mary, explaining why the finished project is so much larger than first envisioned. Prepared to do the work themselves, the couple got some help from the natural landscape. From the deck to the laneway, there is a slope which tended itself well to a waterfall. “We were very fortunate,” said Jim, of the fact they didn’t have to build it up. Having purchased the liner, filter and pump during their visit to Rogers’, the Dicksons returned home and set to the task immediately. The tractor was used to dig out the hole for the bottom pond, which is located in a slightly flatter area at the bottom of the more severe grade. The size is l l’xl6’. (Photo submitted used shovels to dig out shelves for plants, around the area where the liner was placed. The next step was to bring rocks, collected from all over the farm, to use around the edges. A huge one, weighing about 3,000 pounds was brought from the back of the farm to be used as the base for the waterfall. Continued on page 15 SELECTION... DEALER KNOW HOW... VALUE...
