A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Rules of the road Youngsters began preparing for their first day of junior kindergarten next September when they attended a school bus safety lesson at Brussels Public School. Two senior students assisted as OPP Senior Constable Don Shropshall explained how to cross the road safely. (Janice Becker photo) At the Branch It’s time for celebrating family, enjoying the gifts and joys that each one brings to a gathering. It is so nice to have family that truly enjoy each other, or at least they do a pretty good job of fooling this mother - so keep it up, thanks. Anyway I hope you had a good Mother’s Day with your descendants. It was alumni time last week at Guelph for the grads of St. Joseph’s - the yearly dinner and chat to catch up with the nurses who knew you as a teenager. Some of the stories are still hard to believe. These folks saw you work and worry into being a real nurse. It’s always good for the soul to rekindle friendships that have gone on for over 30 years and to keep it in your mind that it really isn’t the years that count, it’s the attitude to them. Two of the women there were celebrating their 65th year as St. Joe’s grads and were pretty spunky too. This time of year is just full of neat things to see and do, so be sure to mark down the United Church dinner on May 25, then get your stuff or your cash ready for the village garage sale May 31. The Lions’ members will be seeing you about a ticket for their elimination draw and dinner in June and the folks from the community vacation Bible school would like you to save the second week in August to help or bring the kids to this fun event. Each church has the details so check it out. One of Bev Brown’s adopted nephews did her proud. Craig Fair from Bluevale who learned a thing or two at Bev’s piano won one of the highest awards at Sheridan College graduation this year in the Arts program, showing great potential in acting, music and dance. Good work Craig. Did you hear the shouts of glee last week as the role of grandparent was bestowed on Frank and Kathy Workman. Duncan has arrived and Craig and Lisa as well as Uncle Peter are just pretty pleased with life. Enjoy the gardens. Bye now, Betty G. W. More subsidies for child care By Keith Roulston Citizen publisher The number of Huron County parents getting subsidies to send their children to child care will increase under a policy starting next month. The county gets a $661,000 child care subsidy a year from the province but last year only $300,000 was spent. The county’s social and cultural services committee noted there was the possibility the province would eventually cut funding if it was not used. In addition, councillors like Lin Steffler of Huron East and Carol Mitchell of Central Huron had been asking for more support for municipal day care centres which are running deficits. Subsidizing the parents will allow greater use of daycare centres, helping centres financially. Among those consulted in the discussions was Walton Little School and day care centres in Goderich, Tuckersmith Wingham.
