During her five years at F.E. NH says no more Bloom-in’ money By Mark Nonkes Wingham Advance-Times Despite the suggestion that they may not run in 2004 due to lack of municipal support. North Huron Twp. council refused to increase their donation to the Wingham Communities in Bloom effort. Wingham’s Communities in Bloom chair Elayne Rintoul asked council to consider an increase to the funding of the 2003 budget. In slashes to the budget, the original Wingham Communities in Bloom submission of $11,295 was cut in half to $6,000. Last year council approved a $7,500 budget for Wingham’s Communities in Bloom. I “The ward of Wingham seemed very committed to the effort last year,” Rintoul said. “Where is the support now.” Rintoul said after a strong showing in the classic division last year, the Wingham Blooms committee was invited to skip the next step in the Communities in Bloom process of competing provincially. Instead, they were invited to compete at a national level. Madill, Kristyn Gerth of Belgrave has excelled in athletics, student government, academics and school leadership. An avid and skilled competitor in track and field, she has won numerous conference and WOSSA She said the group of eight volunteers are very dedicated to the town and have many plans for the upcoming year. In their submitted budget, Communities in Bloom had designated $3,000 for hanging baskets, flower barrels and planters at the Hanna bridge. For hotel stays and mileage $2,400 was budgeted for the Stratford symposium where the results of the competition are announced. Under landscaping, $1,200 was designated to work in Lions Park, Riverside Park and Cruikshank Park. Other expenses included $1,370 for a municipal tree inventory, $800 for a garden party, $750 for annuals and perennials, $700 for advertising, $475 for photos and albums, $300 for postage and paper and $300 for judges’ expenses. “We’re not asking for the sky,” Rintoul said. Rintoul pointed to a town nearby involved in Communities in Bloom which receives $22,000 in support from their municipal government. Rintoul said she could not understand why Blyth’s Communities in Bloom group was medals and has been an OFSAA finalists several times in the discuss and shot put events. Her athletic expertise includes being a leading player of the volleyball and basketball teams. A well-rounded individual, she has granted $5,000 when they were not competing in this year’s competition and had a substantially smaller population. In response to her presentation, councillor Murray Scott questioned what type of fundraising the group was doing. “I noted in your budget it was all expenses and no income,” Scott said. However, Rintoul said last year the group generated $2,000 from fundraising projects. This year, she said, the group is planning many fundraisers such as a car wash, raffle tickets and trees. While council said they were very thankful for the huge volunteer effort, they stood firm on their decision to keep the funding at the $6,000. Councillor Jeff Howson of Blyth said with the Blyth effort they found that if they showed they had some type of plan for the future the judges were usually satisfied. “Just because the judge puts down something doesn’t mean you have to do it,” Howson said. “The judge isn’t paying the taxes here in North Huron.” been involved in musical and drama presentations at Madill and has achieved Honours standing academically.
