Greeting at Blyth United Church
Sunday, April 27 were Fred Hakkers
and Lois van Vliet. Ushering was
Karen Giousher. Guest musician
was Lynda Lentz-McGregor.
The choir sang There’s Room at
the Cross. The children’s hymn was
In the Bulb there is a flower.
For the children’s story Rev.
Eugen Bannerman told of Dr. David
Livingston’s encounter with a lion in
Africa. Dr. Livingston had gone out
on a safari when he heard a lion roar.
He shot at the lion and this made the
lion attack. It grabbed the doctor and
shook him. He looked straight into
the eyes of the lion, unafraid and
there was no pain.
The children were invited to stay
and hear the dramatized lectionary
reading John 20: 19-31. Those
taking part were Chelsea and Amelia
Carter-Brown, Brandilyn, Amanda
and Wyatt Bearss. The children were
dismissed to Sunday school.
Rev. Bannerman’s message to the
adults was Near Death Experience.
Rev. Bannerman related two
stories that had been told to him, one
of an uncle and one of a person
locally. He retold the story of how
St. John had seen the new Jerusalem
as a peaceful nation.
Chris Gleave, representing the
board of stewards, thanked everyone
for supporting the Krispy Kreme
Doughnut fundraiser.
Another announcement was that
the UCW are taking orders for
turkey pies at $2 per pie. These must
be ordered by May 11 and picked up
at the church on May 14 between 3
and 6 p.m. Phone numbers to call are

11 is the Mother’s Day pageant.
Concerned citizens
organize meeting
With many storefronts vacant on
Blyth’s main street for the first time
in its history, a group of concerned
citizens has come together to
organize a community meeting to
seek solutions to the problem.
The meeting, to be held at the
Bainton Gallery of Blyth Memorial
Hall, Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30
p.m., will seek ways to rejuvenize
the main street both for the short
term and long-term, given the
changing circumstances of rural
communities.
The group of concerned citizens
have met several times to consider
solutions to the decline.
“With the arrival of big box stores,
the old function of rural towns as
service centres for the surrounding
community, is being lost,” noted
Brock Vodden. “While some service
businesses will remain viable, it will
be difficult to keep all main street
stores healthy without some new
ideas.”
It has become obvious to the group
that new businesses must be able to
draw business from beyond the
traditional boundaries of the
community and not depend strictly
on local traffic.
“We hope to mobilize the
community to deal with the main
street crisis in much the way the
community has come together to
renovate the Blyth and District
Community Centre,” said Steven
Sparling, who has been involved
with both groups.
“Blyth has a proud tradition of
pulling together to get things done,”
added Don Scrimgeour, one of the
committee members. “We hope we
can bring people together to work on
revitalizing our main street too.”

The Blyth UCW met in the church
parlour with 12 present on Thursday,
Apr. 24.
Emily Phillips opened the meeting
with worship. She spoke of the
women of Easter: Mary of Nazareth,
her sister, Mary, and Mary of
Magdala.
Ollie Craig’s study was: Easter in
the Holy Land today. Christians are
leaving in droves, and there were
only a handful of tourists. This has
come about because of the Arab-
Israeli conflict.
The UCW is making turkey pies.
