Agriculture_____ Brussels Livestock report Heifers top SI 20, avg. $108 to $114 Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending April 19 were 3,629 head of cattle, 1,107 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers traded at prices $1 to $2 lower. The cows sold on a steady market. The veal sold at prices $2 to $5 higher. The lambs sold on a strong active trade with prices steady to last week. The grass cattle sold $5 higher with the yearlings selling on a steady market. There were 738 steers on offer selling from $108 to $114 with sales to $122. Chris Smith, Brussels, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,270 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meats for $122. His overall offering of twelve steers averaged 1,444 lbs. which sold for an average price of $105.96. Forty steers consigned by Tom Triebner, Exeter, averaged 1,463 lbs. selling for an average of $114.64 with his top nine black steers averaging 1,341 lbs. selling for $119. (Janice Becker photo) Blyth vet retires after 29 years of practice By Janice Becker Citizen staff With a smile and some laughs with long-time clients, Alma Conn ended her veterinarian career with Blyth Veterinary Service after almost 25 years. Conn graduated from the University of Guelph in 1974 then spent a year in Saskatchewan with a large animal and embryo transplant practice before returning to Ontario. After working in Kincardine she came to Blyth in 1978. When asked about her years in the area, many of the guests in attendance at her April 15 open averaged 1,371 lbs. selling for an average of $114.51 with his top red steer weighing 1,360 lbs. selling to Moyer Packing Co. for $117.50. Schmidt Brook Farms, Woodstock, consigned two gold steers averaging 1,515 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $116.25. Their overall offering of fifteen steers averaged 1,488 lbs. selling for an average of $114.08. Seven steers consigned by Manassah Martin, Paisley, averaged 1,404 lbs. selling for an average of $113.02 with his top red steer weighing 1,305 lbs. selling for $115.75. One blue steer consigned by Donald Fischer, Brussels, weighed 1,435 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $116.25. His overall offering of three steers averaged 1,417 lbs. selling for an average of $110.66. Ronjac Farms, Grand Valley, consigned twenty-one steers averaging 1,583 lbs. selling for an average price of $107.44 with their top limousin steer weighing 1,515 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $115.50. There are just so many stories.” In marking her last day, Conn said she would like to thank all those who put up with her for all those years. The Huron County Pork Producers have initiated an award to recognize these efforts. The winner of the award will receive $300, a plaque of recognition and media coverage acknowledging their promotion/event. Any community group/individual promoting pork in Huron County is eligible to apply. A brief essay outlining the promotion/event, as well as a photo history, is to be submitted as part of the application. Entries are due by Nov. 15.
