Golden days The Zone 8 Rally was held in Exeter Legion Thursday, April 17, hosted by Exeter Seniors. Evelyn Christensen and Marg Fraser attended from the Auburn Seniors. Congratulations to Lois Haines on the birth of her first great- granddaughter Angela Jay on Wednesday, April 16. Proud parents are Donald and Jane Livermore of Windsor. Proud grandparents are Ron and Margaret Livermore of Fordwich. Easter weekend guests with Jim and Grace Cartwright were their son Paul and Wendy and Kelsey from London. Happy Birthday to Paul on Good Friday. At Knox United Church, Rev. Ted Nelson spoke on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The junior choir sang Jesus Christ Risen and also had the symbols of the meaning of Easter. The United Church Women had a kitchen shower for Camp Menesetung. They wanted to thank everyone for bringing all the gifts for the camp. Also there are still openings for kids to go to the camp. There is a musical fundraiser in Goderich on Sunday, April 27. Tickets can be obtained from the board members or Margaret Bakker at 529-7428. The 150th celebration general meeting will be held on May 5 at the Auburn Community Hall at 7:30 p.m. Auburn and District Lions community yard sale and pancake breakfast is on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. Happy birthday wishes to Sherry Hodges, Janette Plaetzer, Janice Bowland, Justin Armstrong, Courtney Robertson, Donna Robinson, James Dobie, Tyler Stevenson, Robert Coates, Pauline Blok, Curtis Meier, Shirley Forgett, Scott Rodger and Brandon Marshall. Happy anniversary wishes go to Judy and Norm Stoner. FROM AUBURN Laura May and Bud Chamney marked their 50th wedding anniversary with a gathering at Auburn Hall, April 19. (Vicky Bremner photo) Darters do well Chamneys mark 50th anniversary Area dart players have done well at the Darts Ontario championship. In the mixed doubles category Anita Little and John Verwey finished joint fifth. In the ladies division Denise Caza placed joint 17. In the men’s division Andy Lubbers finished joint third and Ray Pigg finished joint 65. Audrey Patterson finished joint 33 in the ladies division. Andy will be going to St. John New Brunswick on June 2 to play on the Ontario Provincial team at the Canadian National Dart tournament. Congratulations to all players and good luck to Andy. It was a day of celebration for Bud and Laura May Chamney April 19 when they marked their golden wedding anniversary with family and friends. Laura May, the daughter of Alvin Edgar and Lillian May (Leggett) Leatherland was born in her parents’ home in Hullett Twp. Gordon Brooks “Bud” Chamney was born to Robert and Clara Jane (Craig) Chamney of Donnybrook. The pair was married by Rev. Charles Scott, April 25, 1953 at the Blyth United Church manse. Attending the couple were Stuart Hallam and June Leatherland. After a honeymoon in Owen Sound, they spent their first year in Donnybrook and have lived in and around Auburn throughout their lives together. Mr. Chamney was very busy with farming, Chamney Sand and Gravel and Chamney Sanitation while his wife was a housewife and mother as well as working at the shoe factory in Seaforth. Bud was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, charter member of the Auburn Lions Club and an avid collector of antique cars and automobile memorabilia. Laura May was a member of the Eastern Star, UCW, Women’s Institute and an enthusiastic collector of pink Depression glass as well as a quilter, knitter and crafter. Both are members of the Auburn United Church. They raised five children, Larry (Deb), Paul (Lynda), Lorraine Mero (Ticker), Doug (Lynn) and Eldon and are the proud grandparents of 12 grandchildren and four great­ grandchildren. The anniversary celebration was held at Auburn Hall with special guests Stuart Hallam and June Patterson in attendance. Day of Caring, May 3 Huron County youth will team up with the Huron United Way to bring the community another Day of Caring. Students from across the county will volunteer their time on Saturday May 3 to help with community­ based outdoor projects. Youth are looking for activities undertaken by service clubs or agencies that could use a few extra hands for spring clean-up or repair. Also seniors needing assistance with lawn and garden work may invite some students in to help. Day of Caring activities are focused in Goderich, Wingham, Clinton and Exeter and anyone with a project may call the Huron United Way at 482-7643. Silver Tops dine out The Auburn Silver Tops with 16 in attendance enjoyed a noon lunch at Sticker’s Restaurant. After they went to the home of Lois Haines’s. The meeting was turned over to Eileen Hanna and Lois Haines who introduced speaker Fran McQuail. Her topic was on the Canada - Cuba Farmer to Farmer Project 2003. She toured with 20 other farmers in Cuba. The main crops are sugar cane and tobacco. The main foods are rice, bananas, garlic and lemon. Lois entertained with some organ music and read a poem How We Can Learn a Lesson From the Easter Bunny. The next meeting is May 21. Historical Society meets at North Huron museum The Huron County Historical Society held a meeting on Thursday evening, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Huron District Museum in Wingham. Paul Carroll, acting interior co­ ordinator, welcomed everyone present. Secretary, Rae McFarlane read the minutes and gave the treasurer’s report. The membership report was given by Jean Fraser. Jodi Jerome outlined the history of the museum, which is in the former post office, and future plans for the museum. The building was built in 1907 and the clock came from England. Currently, the walls of the museum’s first floor gallery feature art by graduating students of F. E. Madill Secondary School. In May the Barn Dance Museum will hold its grand opening. Many other events are planned for the year. Next was a guided walking tour to see the artifacts and photos on display. The next meeting will be held on May 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Anglican Church, Port Albert. The topic is Plans for the Future - the New Bruce County Museum and Archives Facilities with Barbara Ribey. This is also the annual meeting and the election of officers. Any members willing to serve on a new executive are urged to call Paul Carroll, Rae McFarlane or Jean Fraser. New members are welcome and the membership fee is $15 per year. The 2003 Historical Notes will be a heritage potpourri and various materials are being collected. Lunch was served by the Maitland Women’s Institute. Doug Gough, R.I.B. (ONT.)
