Ushering were Karen, Bryce and Brett Giousher and Emily Phillips. Guest musician was Margaret Kai. Many Easter flowers decorated the church. The children’s hymn was Christ Arose. For the children’s story Rev. Eugen Bannerman told the story of Douglas Johnston. Johnston had greeted a friend at his door and asked the woman and daughter to come in and sit down. When he asked them to stay for dinner the woman said she came alone and when Douglas looked, the daughter had disappeared. She said her daughter had died two years ago but she had been thinking about her as she came to the door. Rev. Bannerman told the children that her thoughts of her daughter must have transferred to Mr. Johnston so that he thought he had seen the daughter. He explained that Jesus was the same. He died and reappeared to people, then disappeared again. The children were invited to stay and see The Easter Story by the drama club and Easter readers. Those taking part were Lavern Clark, Chauncey Carter, Lois van Vliet, Chelsea Carter-Brown, Pam Campbell, Amelia Carter-Brown, Brandilyn Bearss, Amanda Bearss, Wyatt Bearss and Warren Moore. Rev. Bannerman’s message to the adults was After-Death Comm unications. (Mary Simmons photo) people here,” she said. While the summer season sees extra business with tourists coming into the town to attend the Blyth Festival, Carol is adamant on the point that the local community support is what has maintained the business throughout the years. “Our business has continued because of surrounding area customers,” she said. “I want to thank them for 20 years in business and I hope to continue serving them.” The Blyth Inn has changed a great deal since the Irwins took over. Known as The Boot, it was primarily a pub with a dining room off to the side where Carol’s Candies and Collectibles is now located. “When we took over it was doing a business of 95 per cent booze and five per cent food,” she said. “Now it’s 95 per cent food and five per cent booze.” She said a lot of the changes come down to the changing times. When they first opened, they were able to stay open later on the weekends and provided entertainment. “There’s just no call for that sort of thing now,” she said. She now closes the place at 11 p.m. on the weekends, explaining that since her husband died last year, it’s too much for her to have to open and close. “You can’t expect someone else to 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 < 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 < 4 4 < 4 4 4 4r By Mary Simmons Student writer After 20 years in business, Carol Irwin has seen a lot of Blyth’s main street businesses come and go, while the Blyth Inn remained. When she first came to Blyth 20 years ago with her husband Peter and three children, Elizabeth, James and Rob, she was ready to do something different with her life. “We always wanted to be in the food business,” she said of her decision with her husband to purchase the Blyth Inn and run it as a family business. “The children were a big help,” she said. “They were all in university at that time, but they were able to come and help out.” Elizabeth now works there full- time, after taking some years off to finish her studies work in Toronto in the restaurant business. She now lives with her husband and children in Wingham and is able to help her mother with the day-to-day running of the inn. Carol admits the 20 years have not been without struggles and challenges. “It’s always a challenge to run a business in a small town,” she said. She said she has enjoyed working with the public and has met a lot of people from all walks of life whom she would never have met if not through her contact with them at the inn. “We have met a great mix of MARLEY PAWS GROOMING PARLOUR For All Your Dogs' Needs Tl p To To,. On May I, 2 and 3, special offers and entertainment will be available. On Thursday, what Carol said are the best wings in Huron County will be available for 35 cents each rather than the regular 65 cents. On Friday, the actual anniversary, lunch and supper specials will be available for $5.20 and $10.20, with entertainment by Ken Pennington from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will also be a supper special on Saturday and anniversary cake will be served with all specials throughout the festivities.
