From the Minister’s Study
Crucifixion as seen through a child’s eyes
Rev. Ethel Miner Clare, Knox
United Church, Belgrave
The story is told by Christina
Berry, a minister in New Mexico.
During the week before Palm
Sunday, Christina met with the
music director of her church who
shared this:
I was rehearsing the children for
their Maundy Thursday anthem, and
the boys (we have several very
rowdy unchurched boys in our choir)
were jostling around as usual. In
desperation, I looked pitifully at
them and said, “C’mon you guys —
this is really serious! This is the last
time we get to sing about Jesus
before they come and nail him to a
tree.”
Harvey, hitting one of his brothers,
stopped in mid-swing. “They did
WHAT?”
“Crucified him. Hung him on a
cross. Nailed him to a tree.”
I don’t think I was being very
helpful, but it hadn’t crossed my
mind that they didn’t know what
crucified meant.
“NAILED him?” Harvey said.
“But WHO DID THAT?”
“Well, the people who were mad at
him. You know, we’ve got him
riding into town and everyone is
cheering and saying ‘YAAY, Jesus,’
then they’re nailing him to a cross.”
“But —” Harvey is speechless,
horrified. “WHO did that?”
“Pretty much the same people who
were cheering earlier.”
Harvey is sure I must be mistaken.
Manny and Alejandro figure I’m
making this up for dramatic effect.
“How could they nail him to a
tree?” Harvey asks.
I demonstrate with an imaginary
hammer. “By the hands and feet.”
Harvey can’t take this. “But why
didn’t somebody STOP them?
Where were his friends?”
“They all ran away, because they
were afraid.”
‘That’s not right,” Harvey said,
outraged. “He didn’t do anything
wrong.”
Harvey’s outrage caught my
attention as I read this story. Are you
and I outraged by the crucifixion?
Or do we skip from the Palm Sunday
parade to the Easter celebration
without experiencing the pain,
humiliation, betrayal, desertion, and
outrage that are also part of the
Easter story?
