WI donates hats FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch President attends meeting in Stratford By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Ladies Auxiliary met on Monday night, April 7. There were only six present to enjoy the potluck meal. The next meeting May 5 will be elections. On Wednesday evening there was a calf vaccination seminar held at the Branch. The Thursday night dart group had a good night and are soon finished. In first place were Gary Emmerson and Adam Smith. Second place was Paul Gross and John Harrison. Saturday, President Rick McDonald attended the District convention held in Stratford. He attended the presidents’ meeting in the mom 1 ng. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 11 tables at play. Highs for the day were Charles and Millie Johnston with 81 points. In second place with 80 points were Lloyd and Lillian Appleby. Third place was a tie with 75 points between Arthur and Maxine Hinz and Tom and Eileen Sloan. The low players of the day were Janet Mathers and Irlma Edgar. The lucky lone hand winners of free passes were Ivan Bennewies and Marg Carter. Euchre is every two weeks at the Branch. A birthday was celebrated downstairs at the Branch Saturday evening. Relatives and friends of Heather Dauphin gathered and enjoyed a social evening together. On Sunday, Comrades Rick and Jo- Ann McDonald, Norm Dobson and Glenn Bridge attended the District convention elections in Stratford. We were able to witness the election of comrade Eric Ross to the position of District Commander for District CL He was installed in that position at the end of the day. Congratulations to Comrade Eric on attaining this position. The singles dance had around 90 enjoy the music of Country Versatiles. Dances are every two weeks. The dance scheduled for Mother’s Day is cancelled because the auditorium floor is being refinished beginning the last week of April. There is a general meeting on April 22 and elections will be held. All members are invited to attend at 8 p.m. The Majestic Women’s Institute met in the Brussels Library on Wednesday, April 9 at 12:30 p.m. A potluck dinner was enjoyed by 15 members and four guests. Following the opening Linda Wall from the Wingham Cancer Clinic arrived to pick up the 42 cancer patient hats made by the Institute members. She gave a short informative talk, stating that there are 18 different drugs used to fight cancer. A patient has to see an oncologist at the London Cancer Centre first, then they can get treatments at a satellite centre, such as Wingham, if necessary. Kitchener is constructing a building now for cancer patients. Owen Sound Cancer Centre is presently taking the. overload of patients. The treatment for children with cancer is different and they must go to London or Owen Sound for treatment. A letter was read regarding erecdng a sign for Brussels’ coming events. After a short discussion the members decided in favour of it. Happy Birthday was sung to Edna Pletch. The annual meeting took place. Ruth Sauve-Schade read the report of the nomination committee. The District president installed the Soccer numbers down Yet again, registration numbers are down for Brussels Minor Soccer. At the recent meeting the executive was told that as there are only seven players for the U-17 there may not be a team. Some players from U-6 may need to be moved up to U-7 so there can be enough players for a team in that age group as well. There is only one team in each of the U-15, U-13, U-ll and U-9 squads. There are 29 players in the U-6 group and 22 for kiddie kickers. As the latter number is too low for two teams, they may forego a kiddie kicker team this year and combine the players to make four U-6 teams. The registation fees totalled $6,100. The bank balance sits at just over $9,000. For expenses, the Huron East levy is $10 for each child registered. There will be tournament, trophy and referee fees as well as insurance in the aijiount of $8.95 for each child. The executive includes: president, Ken Warwick; treasurers, Tammy King, Kathy Sebastian; secretary, Jacquie Waechter; registrar, Pauleen Kerkhof; coach co-ordinator, John Peeler; referee-in-chief, Abi Corbett; equipment co-ordinator, Murray Bone; uniform co-ordinator, Rose Kellington; directors, Donna Prior, Ros Schlosser, Sherri Oliver. It was decided that each team coach would receive a $20 honorarium and a team picture if their child is not playing on the team coached. Executive members will also receive in honorarium in the amount of their eldest child’s registration fee. It was decided there would be no year-end banquet. A decision will be made at a later date as to how to celebrate the end of the season. Trophies are on display at Stroop’s Meat Market. The business has agreed to post soccer information. The next meeting is tonight, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. officers for the coming year. Next October, the Guelph Area Convention will be held in Harriston. This is a one-day event. Majestic’s delegate is Edna McLellan. The delegates to the District annual are Lucy Hesse and Edna McLellan. An executive meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at the home of Lucy Hesse at 10 a.m. A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Coll 887-6236 IVW 887-9231 Well we’re smack dab in the middle of Holy Week. The ministerial noon hour Lenten Services have been well attended. This is a nice tradition we have in Brussels, listening to thoughts of this very special time, then enjoying lunch with friends as part of the shared hour. Thanks for the organizing, Brussels and area ministers. The Maitland Valley Foundation held its annual April party on Friday night. Music by Celtic Fire from London, good food by Cardiff Catering with a little wine and it was certainly fun. Lots of items were on display, each one a treat to view. Gift ideas unique and original as well as fun and utility items were available for auction, both silent and Lodge plans for 70th Morning Star Rebekah Lodge 315 Brussels held its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 8 with Noble Grand Sister Gertie Kellington presiding. Visits and phone calls have been made to several members. Plans were made to attend the conferring of the Rebekah Degree on Monday, May 5 at 8 p.m. in the ballroom of the Hilton Hotel, London. The lodge is celebrating its 70th anniversary on May 21. Plans are underway. Birthday cakes and ice cream was served to celebrate Sister Muriel Whitfield’s birthday. This organization keeps tabs on the watershed of our area and all the interferences to it. The Wawanosh Nature Centre is their most obvious endeavour but they also do other very timely work. Education and information for the public of the importance of Mother Nature in the working of our lives is their work. This April evening is one way that the public can support their good work and have done so for the last 15 years. A call to the Maitland Valley Office in Wroxeter will get you details if you wish to help more. Audrey Cardiff reports that the spring fling on Saturday was fun and a success. The proceeds from this party will be used to replace the equipment at the community centre as needed. Tables, chairs, kitchen utensils and the many other items needed to have a good party are on the list of uses for the money gained.
